I highly doubt that you really need to babysit for productivity on this sort of employee, as everything should come to light through status meetings, roadmaps, project schedules/slippages, etc. If someone is slacking, it will be painfully obvious.

THIS! Everyone I’ve ever met in my field and at my level give 100% not because they want to impress the boss but for themselves. They don’t know how to half ass something unless you have pissed them off.
