1) America has no farm system like the competitive countries of the world when it comes to soccer. Club teams find and invest in talented kids as early as 5-6 years old and put them in a structured situation where their whole life is school and training.
2) All the best American athletes gravitate toward the 4 major sports because of the money. There is no money in the MLS. America is great at bringing out the best of athletes with the left overs from the big 4 but unlike Women's soccer being the fastest, biggest and strongest (most of the time) doesn't translate to W's on the field.
