Keep it clean and get a tuneup on it once a year and it'll last a lifetime
I have an entry level Trek that I eventually handed down to my daughter to use to travel around the university campus.
The bike is 16 years old, sat out in the rain, snow, dust for 4 years on campus. Clean it up, tune it up and still rides great.
