Wasn't expecting that ending.
I had a similar situation. First real professional job out of college. Manager had some sort of cancer. Everyone knew. He was going to die. Got lot's of sympathy and leeway (frequent doctors visits). Got a huge bonus for his family for after he passed. CEO bought him a vid camera so he could record his limited time before he died.
I mess up and went over his head (in his mind) on something and he fired me. One week later, he was busted faking the whole thing. Terminated!
