Doesn't happen nearly enough. Especially with side characters. Probably explains the rise of superhero movies where there's a clear hero and a clear villain. Lots of shows/movies these days seem to pick sides. Frank Underwood in House of Cards, for example, is 100% sleazeball. Lots of movies/shows made lame attempts to force some gray area.

And Gilligan does more than just make his characters relatable. Most of his characters seem to have fatal flaws. And it's amazing to watch his progression. I remember when he forced the Marie shoplifting storyline in season 1 of BB. Gilligan has you rooting against the good guys like Hank and Chuck, two guys who generally do the right thing, but their fatal flaw bugs the crap out of a lot of people. That's pretty amazing character development.
