I had a similar incident today.
Early this morning when I was leaving our office 10th and Minnesota to get in my work truck I noticed this black dude in the parking lot about 30 ft away talking to these white guys who were there standing outside a large moving truck. The white guys were there when I first arrived, I think they just used the large empty lot to park the moving truck and smoke cigarettes before getting on with their day.
I heard someone said HEY right before I opened the door to my truck, but when I looked no one was really looking my way, but as soon as I started the engine the black guy came walking fast my way. The white guys got in their truck and headed out.
I figured I knew what he wanted as he approached the window. He wanted some money. Told him I dont carry cash. He seemed overly disappointed as usually they just move on, but he just shakes his head as says come on man, I know you got some money. He had 816 tattooed across his neck, a coffee in a large styrofoam cup tucked in one of his arms against his chest, and a cigarette I think he just bummed from one of those white guys in his other hand. He was kind of shivering as it was a little chilly at 8AM.
Sigh; I told him to hold on as I checked for loose change and found probably a couple bucks in loose change to give him. Then I asked if he needed a lighter for his cigarette. I had a few in my truck and could spare one. He said yeah he needs a lighter.
So he grabs the lighter with the same hand he took the change with and shifts the cigarette to the other hand with the coffee pressed up against his chest and proceeds to light the cigarette.
Well you guessed it, the cheap styrofoam cup gives and his large coffee spills all over him.
Ok, I couldent help it I laughed. The whole front of his shirt was soaked. I think his shirt managed to soak up 90% of that coffee that was in that cup.
He did not think it was funny. I said I was sorry, but he was still pissed, I hoped more about the coffee than me but he was not a happy camper. I told him I had to get going and that was the end of that. I wonder if he thinks Im a racist after the way our encounter ended.
