According to Wookiepdia, the Mortis arc was going to feature Darth Bane and Darth Revan as Dark Side force ghosts but Lucas kibosh'ed that. The Son was used and his design was meant to link 'the past' (meta, the Clone Wars series) with 'the future' (meta, SW: Rebels).

Ok.
I'll be honest, that $#it seemed to fit more with LOTR than Star Wars. I hated those 3 episodes. If it's just a coincidental I can go back to ignoring it...
