It wasn't his wife - it was NBC (iirc).
They had an option on Remington Steele. Brosnan had been chosen as the new Bond and was scheduled to be announced. The rumors had already picked up speed and because he was now 'Bond', Brosnan's name suddenly became hot. Remington Steele had been cancelled but the option hadn't expired yet and when Brosnan became a name about town, NBC picked up the Option and killed his ability to get out of the deal.
Eon moved on when they didn't want to wait for the option period to expire.
My recollection is that they didn't even end up bringing back the series (or maybe it was a movie deal). In either event, Brosnan got absolutely !@#$ed by the whole deal.
