Just to recap: F1 drivers with Michelin (or Firestone) tires withdrew from the race after the formation lap in protest over tire safety, leaving a few drivers on the track.
With a stadium filled to capacity of over 260,000 munching franks and doing what American crowds at racing events do best - throw frank wrappers onto the field had suddenly turned hostile - F1 teams were rescued by police security and escorted out of the country. They were abruptly told never to return.
In 2012, F1 received an invitation to return after Circuit of the Americas in Austin, TX built the first racing track specifically for Formula 1. History was made...Good times.

Oh yeah I remember that well. It got pretty crazy almost to the point that I thought there would be violent protest. They did race at Indy the next year though and IMS gave us free tickets for that race.
