He'll get 2 years but he has no guaranteed money left in 2017. He also has a $2 million roster bonus due in '17.
So if he can't rise to the occasion in '17 they cut him (post June 1). $3.6 hits the cap in '17 with another $3.6 in '18. They free up just a bit north of $13 million and walk away.
You being reactionary doesn't mean everyone else is just being ignorant. There's a pretty obvious out in the contract after 2016. Smith will have 2 seasons to prove he's worth the next 2 on his deal and the Chiefs have taken the first step towards ensuring there are no more questions to answer by then.
