Its an incredibly influential film in SciFi. The design and look of it has been ripped off countless times. Your right, the special effects hold up very well.
Whats interesting is, it was a huge flop upon release. Most people thought it was a tremendous bore, including myself. But as the years grew, people began to really dig it alot more. Im still not sure it has a huge enough following to make the sequel a hit, but who knows?
