I noticed in the OP you mentioned the fire thing on Brush creek which is a seasonal thing I believe happens in the middle of October. If we're talking about festivals and such a few more would be....

The Plaza Art Fair: Happens middle of September on the plaza. Pretty fun event to attend.

There's a kick ass Greek Festival in Overland Park which goes on in the middle of August IIRC.

St. Patricks day in Westport

The Big 12 tournament downtown is fun. If you can't get tickets just go next door to PNL and watch the game in the courtyard it's fun.

The KC Boat show at Bartle Hall.

Renaissance Festival in Bonner Springs.
