As the article stated, they'll work something out with him. But it's not going to free up $8M in cap space. Probably nowhere near it.

After reading into it more, you're right. They aren't obligated to pay him, but he doesn't automatically fall off the books.
Cut him and sign him to a 1 year 8m contract for the wizards...or better yet hire him for the oil business at his current rate.
