And trust me, it was a stunt. Fox didn't want to lose FF (for the life of me, I can't figure out why not) and after two mediocre at best films a decade ago, are trying something "different".
If Fox isn't playing to FF's core fans, who are they playing to? How is changing the mythology going to attract new fans? How does this advance the story forward? Is he going to have some incredibly interesting back story that changes the entire mythology?
It's a ploy, plain and simple. Whether it works or not remains to be seen.

I think the Marvel 'brand' holds so much value these days that FOX keeps holding on to the FF rights
