And then once you have your gear, you gain character levels (aka light) by gaining xp on all that gear by doing basically everything. This is where farming materials on each of the planets (while you run patrols) as well as collecting ascended materials comes into play. You use that stuff to level up your purple gear, which in turn gives you more light and a higher character level.
