Disneys Iger says he wants to make more Indy movies eventually. They will probably need a new actor to play Indy though.

Thoughts?

Disney has been rather busy as the studio prepares to launch the next series of ‘Star Wars’ films. But there’s another beloved franchise starring Harrison Ford that they’re still keeping in mind: ‘Indiana Jones,’ of course. The last new ‘Indiana Jones’ film was released in 2008, and given the underwhelming critical response to ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,’ we figured that might be the end of Jones. We were wrong.

Disney chief Bob Iger sat down for an interview with Variety today, and reporter Marc Graser live-tweeted some choice bits of their conversation, like this one:

Disney’s Bob Iger: “We’d love to make another Indiana Jones movie but we’re pacing ourselves right now,” launching Star Wars first.

Disney plans to release a new ‘Star Wars’ film every year, beginning next December with ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens.’ And although they’ll be keeping pretty busy with that franchise, they would still like to make another ‘Indiana Jones’ film. Previously, it had been rumored that Disney was planning to reboot the franchise, which the studio denied—but judging by this new information from Iger, that actually might be the case.

It just wouldn’t make much sense to cast Ford in the leading role of a new ‘Indiana Jones’ movie, given that … well, he’s gotten a bit older. The studio has some options: cast Ford in a new ‘Indiana Jones’ adventure; cast Ford in a smaller role and have him pass the torch to a younger star (this wouldn’t make much sense); or, recast the role entirely, finding a younger star to kick off a new series of films. The first option seems kind of nutty, but Ford did play Jones on the big screen in ‘Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’ in 2008, when he was in his mid-60s. The last option definitely seems to be the most plausible. Iger says that Disney is pacing itself, but by the time they get around to making a new ‘Indiana Jones’ movie, Ford could be close to 80 years old.

What do you guys think? Should Disney recast the role of Indiana Jones for a new generation, or would you like to see Ford play the hero just one more time in a film that would let him bow out on a high note.
