They technically *could* use it but LucasFilm has stated emphatically that the EU, which includes all of the books, games, comics and so on are all out. They said to think of it as a sort of "parallel" universe.
The new "Star Wars Rebel" series is canon and will have a direct affect on Episodes 7-9. There's a new book entitled "Tarkin" that's canon, with more new books on the way.
