The answer to your question is because she had earned it much in the way that clay earned it.
The only way to break the cycle is to kill the problem. Gemma is the problem. Her mistakes led to the death of Bobby, all off those people at dinosa, Tara, the war with the Chinese and his oldest son knows that gemma killed his mother.
Jax is going to kill her. Sutter knows this is the end. Why would he care about killing off Gemma. Because they are married? Pffff. He said he doesn't want this to be a sopranos type ending.
I took that to mean without finality.
Gemma dying would bring a finality to that.
