Rubbing alcohol and salt is much easier and faster.
For a small pipe, put it in a quart baggie and then add salt and rubbing alcohol. Shake it up resin is no longer attached to the pipe.
For larger pieces, fill the piece with rubbing alcohol and salt. Plug holes (heh heh), and then shake until resin is no longer attached.
