If you were aware violent crime is down you wouldn't have alluded to its rise being caused by inadequate parental discipline in the Peterson thread.
Moving on, the nature of modern communication allows for us to access anything instantaneously. Since we are aware of more things, we perceive them as happening more often than they did in the past.
Example: You catch your wife with the plumber's dick in her ass. You assume that she was faithful to you until that point. Truth is, she's been getting spit roasted for five years, but you didn't know about any of that.
