I fail to see how the coach (or his wife for that matter) did anything wrong other than possibly this line, and without seeing it, I can't say "The coach broke free of his attackers and went to his car for a second gun, which he pointed at various people in the crowd, Espinoza said". Sounds to me like this Burris fellow may have taken one too many knocks to the noggin.
