I think she turned on him when he stole the farmers silver.
To me it was sad because he fought for her for no other reason than to keep her away from what he thought was the Lannisters. She basically has no more cash value, but he did it because he thought it was right. Then he gets crunched and abandoned by ghe one he was trying to save. Brutal.
