At this point, it's probably not a good idea. First, as you said, you're eventually just going to get caught up and be in the same position you're in now. Second, due to the divergences from the source material and the amount of stuff left out, you'll have to start from the beginning. Given their size, unless you're unemployed and single, it will take you a while to get through them.

I would, however, suggest reading the books when everything is said and done. The world is just so much richer.
