They could easily do an X-Men film without Mystique and never miss a beat, much like they've done X-2, 3, First Class, and Days of Future Past without Sabretooth. One would imagine with how they've made Wolverine the focus for so many of these damned movies, he would have been in more of them, and moreover, done correctly, but whatever. Wolverine is supposed to be short, hideous, and permanently ill-tempered also but what can you do.

Not only is Mystique expendable as a character, but Jennifer Lawrence is now the second actress to play the character, and quite honestly she doesn't hold a candle to what Rebecca Romijn brought to the screen. If she's hoping to pull in that kind of payday, its going to be playing another character in someone else's universe.
"Lawrence’s rising star is paying off for the latest “X-Men” adventure. Nearly three-quarters of ticket buyers said that they were motivated to see “X-Men: Days of Future Past” because of her role as the shape-shifting Mystique, according to a survey by online ticketer Fandango."

Personally I think actors get too much credit/blame for how a movie does, but studios take this kind of thing very seriously. She won't make as much as Downey did because an X-Men movie probably won't make $1.5 billion, but she could get a piece of the gross like Downey did.
