I'm afraid there's no way to recover it if you don't know it. The only way to resolve it is to restore the device as new. Which unfortunately means you will lose everything on the device and it will be reverted to factory state. Hopefully you had iCloud sync enabled so you have backups of your apps and data. Had you initially setup the iPad with a computer, you could reset the passcode that way. But if you've never synced it to a computer, you're SOL. You will be able to reinstall the stuff you purchased with the iTunes account used on the iPad after you restore it though.

In the future, do an initial sync with a computer when you set up the iPad. This gives you many benefits later should something **** up, such as in this case.
