To be fair, it also mentions in the article that some pilots will program an alternate flight plan in case of emergency. Still lots of questions.

I read that too, and I'm just not buying it. Just how common is that? That seems like a whole lot of wasted time to program a route that you are 99.9999% not going to use for every single flight. Do some pilots do that, and then brag about that practice to other pilots? Sure, probably there are a few crazy people who do that. But not Malaysian pilots.
