No one would debate the football programs being closer to each other than the basketball programs. Basketball is top 5 all time vs. top 40. Football is top 40 (Missouri) vs. top 60.
But the football programs are not anywhere near as close as you and others like to make them out. Yes, the historical series is almost exactly 50/50. Yes, KU has 3 players in the NFL Hall of Fame while Missouri has just two.
But every other comparison comes out strongly in Missouri's favor:
Conference titles: 15 vs. 9
Division titles (including ties to prevent Kansas shutout): 4 vs. 1
Bowl appearances: 30 vs. 12
Bowl wins: 14 vs. 7
Consensus All Americans: 12 vs. 6
Major Bowl appearances (this is how it will be counted going forward): 10 vs. 3 (note: Even just counting Orange bowl appearances, Missouri wins this 4 to 3)
All time winning percentage: .549 vs. .496
And if you look at recent trends, the gap grows even wider. Yes, Kansas rode a perfect storm to an Orange Bowl it did not deserve. Congrats. But other than that, Missouri stomps all over Kansas in the Pinkel era. Head-to-head record, winning percentage, players drafted, first round picks, etc.
