Does it really need a clever setup, though? In real life men and women have done, do, and will continue to do stupid shit, make clearly poor decisions, and suffer from unforseen consequences all in the name of attraction, love, lust, infatuation, etc.
The main character was as we're every character on the show a flawed being much like any real person except we watch with rational 3rd party view and it its always easy to spot as a disinterested or uninvested outsider, and yet we do the same things in real life because whatever drives us or tempts our fate we never make the smart, logical, or sensible choice all the time.
Todd and Lydia were both true sociopaths, so that's the attachment or attraction, as to why once again the bug flew close to the hypnotic light and got zapped the **** dead. Dominos fall, collateral damage, Shakespeare and all that timeless yet continual tale shit. THE END.
