Which is why I find it offputting for Walt to go on a full episode of redemption, without being triggered by some kind of major event. Jesse killing Todd... THAT was redemption. Walt going on a killing spree is basically tying up loose ends for the shit that he created. Gilligan had a chance to allow Walt to redeem himself while still giving him something to emotionally stew on. But he didn't. It came off to me as fairly insincere attempt at redeeming a character. It was a fun episode to watch, but way too vanilla given some of the amazing stuff Breaking Bad has given us.
What makes you think he didn't stew on something? That's why he saved Jesse. He had plenty of time to stew on things when he said goodbye to his daughter and watched his son from a distance for the last time.

It may not have been a major event to you, but impugning his input to Gray Matter is the single largest event behind why he would return in the first place--it's the entire reason why the show even exists. Everything Walt did was about building the name and legacy he forsook by selling his share for $5k, and when the two co-founders pissed on him on national television, what else would you expect that character to do?
