Football message boards in the 80's?

Forgive my ignorance but I had no clue people were talking on boards in the mid 80's. Here's a post of a guy explaining how the Pats are gonna defeat Chicago in the Super Bowl dated 86. https://groups.google.com/forum/m/#!...ll/MUAb4NqwwFk. Sorry for the sloppy formatting but I'm at work so go here and look around https://groups.google.com/forum/m/#!...sport.football

Man, he had to have been a HARDCORE nerd to have been on message board in 1986

suzzer99 09-22-2016 02:15 PM

I believe they were called newsgroups back then.

Here's a gem from a Raiders fan talking about Todd Marinovich. https://groups.google.com/forum/m/#!...ro/Q3t7Ii3Sb6o

The future for the Raiders hangs on three young men.
Nick Bell-Scary, if the Raiders use him as their number one back he would
pound the defense silly. If Roger Craig could come back to form
this would be a great duo. Marcus Allen, although it hurts to
say it, is getting old and worn from many years of
extensive use.

Todd Marinovich- He showed heart and determination last season. He has
potential to become a great QB. Unlike Tesaverde and
George, Marinovich **HAS** an offensive line in front
of him to give him protection. The Raiders need to make
him the starter this season.

Raghib Ismail- If he returns and plays for the Raiders he would help the
aging Raider recieving corps. Tim brown and Raghib Ismail
will be the future for the Raiders.

Nick Bell, Todd Marinovich, Raghib Ismail and Tim Brown, all young
and all with great talent. The Future of the Raiders looks good.

I was on a Chiefs newsgroup in the mid-90s. There was a regular poster there named Ray who always argued that what the Chiefs needed was Mike Ditka as coach.

Like many of my fellow Chiefers I am sick and tired of the BS
surrounding the Chiefs past futility in the play-offs. Save for Marty,
Derrick and few others, this years Chiefs team bears little resemblance
to past teams. Never before have the Chiefs had an offense as "potent"
as this year. Gone are the days of a conservative 3yds and a cloud of
dust. Add to this fact that the Chiefs have undoubtedly the fastest
team defense in the league and one can see the reasons for our optimism.

I can't believe the Dolphans want to play the Chiefs, especially in
Arrowhead. They are merely confused about past success they have had at
the Chiefs expense. What they fail to realize (or cleverly hide) is
that Miami's success has come in Miami!!! not Arrowhead.

As for the Steelers, thay are 0-1 in Arrowhead in the playoffs and
Denver has never played KC in Arrowhead during the playoffs.

Hearing week after week about Marty's futility in the playoffs got me
wondering. I reviewed the Chiefs playoff record since 1990 and found an
interesting STAT or two.

1990 Chiefs lose to Dolphins in 1st round in Miami
1991 Chiefs beat Raiders in 1st Round in KC lose to Buffalo in Buffalo
in 2nd round
1992 Chiefs lose to SD in 1st round in SD
1993 Chiefs beat Pitt in 1st round in KC, beat Houston in 2nd round in
Houston and lose to Buff in AFC Champ game in Buff
1994 Chiefs lose to Miami in 1st round in Miami
1995 Chiefs lose to Indy in KC
The result is merely this:

The Chiefs have played a total of 9 playoff games (more than the other 3
contenders) in which they are 3-6.
Of the 9 games 6 have been on the road 3 have been in KC.
The Chiefs are 2-1 at home and 1-5 on the road.

Using the stats above it doesn't take a "rocket scientist" to figure out
the value of homefield to the Chiefs. Add to the mix that the results
above were posted by Chief teams of "lesser" talent and a conservative
offense. You can readily see the optimism the Chief fans have regarding
the team this year.

Taking a further look, I examined the playoff records since 1990 of the
Steelers, Dolphins and Bronco's.

Miami - 3-5 3-1 in Miami and 0-4 on the road (Tidbit: haven't won a
road playoff game in the Marino era 1984-1996)
Pitt - 4-4 4-2 in Pitt and 0-2 on the road
Denver - 1-3 1-1 in Denver and 0-2 on the road

Gee, fancy that! The 3 contenders to the Chiefs this year are a
combined 0-8 on the road since 1990. Now I realize I set myself up to
be chided that each of these teams has different personnel than the past
and that would be correct. My point is that it is extremely difficult
to win on the road and I like the Chiefs chances this year if we secure
HFA (save the fluke in KC in '95 and Denver in '96). Indy is a
non-entity and Jax
will be hard pressed to repeat last year.

I like our chances this year! None of these teams scares me, especially
playing in a Sea of Red in Arrowhead.

I had a C64 with a 300 baud modem that I upgraded to 1200 baud and felt like a speed demon. We got free long distance codes and would call BBSs all over the country and trade pirated C64 games. Then I opened my own BBS and for a while had the best game selection in the KC area.

Glory days.

I still wonder how many of you I used to argue with on the KC Star's comment section in the late 90s.
