United Way gestapo
Anybody else have to endure this crap at work every year?

Yes I do, a place I worked at previously the owner was big into it.
It was suggested that everyone contribute 1 percent of your pay to the United Way it if you wanted management off your back and to move up in the company so you play the game and give. |
Holy shit. It's awful how bad this crap gets shoveled down our throats.

**** These people;
Brian Gallagher, President of the United Way receives a $375,000 base salary (U.S. funds), plus so many numerous expense benefits it's hard to keep track as to what it is all worth, including a fully paid lifetime membership for 2 golf courses (1 in Canada, and 1 in the U.S.A.), 2 luxury vehicles, a yacht club membership, 3 major company gold credit cards for his personal expenses...and so on. This equates to about $0.51 per dollar of income goes to charity causes. Read more at http://www.snopes.com/politics/busin...Z28XU0zS5Pu.99 |
Yes, every year and never contributed a dime. I looked up their executive payroll sometime back and that's all I needed to see. ****ing scam.
|
The whole thing is so disingenuous. They promote the fact that the money raised at your workplace is spent locally... sure, after they rake their 22% off the top, or whatever the latest estimate is.
They also give money to a lot of things that people would have problems of conscience with. They counter this objection by saying "Well, you can designate where you want the money to go if you wish." Sure, but why wouldn't I just donate it to straight them, then? |
We get it every year. I don't know one person who donates. Supervisors hand them to us, tell us to write zero, and give it back.

If I want to give to a charity, I give to the Salvation Army. That money gets to the places and people that need it. |
We used to do it at my old job. They pressured all us supervisors to give money. If you said no, they kept on hounding you until you finally gave in.
|
I had to set the damn meetings up for my office this year. They encourage you to give something to someone and prefer United Way, but don't say anything if you choose a different charity.

Brian A. Gallagher, whose last reported total yearly compensation was $717,076 (including a base salary of $415,613, which is a bit higher than the $375,000 figure reported above). Charity Navigator rates this organization's efficiency at 89%, while Forbes rates it at 85% Read more at http://www.snopes.com/politics/busin...U1BG6wcqGsP.99 89% efficiency isn't that bad. But I agree with whomever posted about the Salvation Army. |

United Way wouldn't personally be my first choice, but they actually do have a pretty good record as far as the work they do and the amount of $ that goes to charitable purposes vs. overhead. However, the "gestapo" isn't United Way, it is your employer. Your employer signs up with United Way so UW will say, "Thanks, _____" and your employer gets recognition. And your employer can tout how they contribute to the community. It is your employer hounding you, not UW. This actually seems kind of obvious, but misplaced butthurt and anger is a CP tradition, if not a requirement. |
