The Shittiest Draft To Ever Win A FFL

I believe I had it this year.

Won the league with this draft:

1. (4) Ray Rice (Bal - RB)
2. (17) Aaron Rodgers (GB - QB)
3. (24) Ryan Mathews (SD - RB)
4. (37) Antonio Brown (Pit - WR)
5. (44) Dez Bryant (Dal - WR) [keeper]
6. (57) Montee Ball (Den - RB)
7. (64) Kyle Rudolph (Min - TE)
8. (77) Andrew Luck (Ind - QB) [keeper]
9. (84) Giovani Bernard (Cin - RB)
10. (97) Justin Blackmon (Jax - WR)
11. (104) Shane Vereen (NE - RB)
12. (117) Houston (Hou - DEF)
13. (124) Vincent Brown (SD - WR)
14. (137) Alshon Jeffery (Chi - WR)
15. (144) Justin Tucker (Bal - K)

Ray Rice was a bust. Aaron Rodgers got injured. Ryan Mathews in the 3rd round was pathetic value -- he paid off in the playoffs but he's been horrendous up until then (I started Ben Tate, Andre Brown, and Mike ****ing James over him throughout the year).

My WR pickups were almost all homeruns: Brown, Bryant, Blackmon, and Jeffery were all golden gets (I picked up Keenan Allen early on, too).

My late round picks were almost all terrible. Andrew Luck was pretty much a bust down the stretch, and he was my ****ing keeper. I drafted Montee Ball in the 6th. Kyle Rudolph was one of 5 TEs I started this year, and they were all terrible. And Houston was atrocious this year.

My amazing WRs aside, I had next-to-no scoring. I was the 4th lowest scorer in the league, and limped into the playoffs at 8-6, but I beat the 1st place guy in round 1 and the 2nd place guy only put up 75 points against me in the finals.

Needless to say, there's a dozen dudes in Springfield who really, really hate my ass.

I've said it before....but the playoffs are all luck. My team won it all.....it was the highest scoring team in the league by a mile. But if i would have played in round 1 off the playoffs....i would have gotten demolished. Instead I had a bye and my team put it together two weeks in a row.

The entire thing is luck. Not just the playoffs.

I missed the playoffs (leading the 12 team league in scoring, of course) with this roster:

Newton
Kaepernick

Bush
Lacy
J. Bell
Starks
D. Brown

Marshall
Gordon
Decker
Cooper

Graham

Bailey/Crosby

I've heard the whole, "it's nothing but luck" quote a million time. I've been top 3 in my league 6 years in a row and top scorer 4 out of 6 years. It's not the draft that does it for you, although it helps to not be a dumbass. It's the waiver wire. It also pays to take a look at your playoff players around mid-season and trade for solid matchups, if you can make it happen. Yes, a Jamaal Charles 51 point game is lucky, but most of the time my team has solid contributions throughout.

Sorry, but when the highest scoring team in the league misses the playoffs, that's (bad) luck.

But it IS luck. What you're describing works in a Roto league where points is the only thing that matters. But you could be the highest scoring team in a normal league and happen to pull the schedule where you play the teams when they have their highest scoring games. There was a guy in my league that constantly scored around 150-160 points a game. Unfortunately he was playing games where the other team just happened to score 180 points that one week. The next week they went back to scoring 120-130.

Meanwhile....I averaged 160 points a game.....and got to play teams when they had down weeks and were scoring 90-100.

IMHO there is some measure of skill in consistently putting together a team that scores in the upper portions of a league, but as it relates to a won/lost record that doesn't always shake out.
In a regular league using playoffs, the "skill" it takes to win a league goes down even further.
In my big money league, this is our 12th year and the highest scoring team in the regular season has won the playoffs twice.

The Franchise 12-24-2013 04:35 PM

I think this is the first year that I've seen the highest scoring team in the league also go up against the least amount of points total......AND win the championship.

And if you look at my team from the beginning of the season to the end.....it really doesn't look like a juggernaut of a team.

Skyy God 12-24-2013 04:51 PM

It's skill. I had good teams but failed to a) plan ahead for Brees' shitty playoff schedule and b) keep key pickups (e.g., Todman Week 15) from my opponents.

There's some luck of course, but I agree.

I think the biggest luck aspect is the weekly matchups. One year I killed in overall scoring. Most people in the playoffs had about 1000-1100 overall points. I had 1400+. 4 times I scored the 2nd-most points for the week--and I was matched against the guy who had the highest. Finished 6-8 and out of the playoffs. I almost had to quit football I was so aggravated.

cosmo20002 12-24-2013 06:31 PM

More bad luck is having Jay ****ler as your QB in the Championship (because your other QBs kept getting hurt and he was the best option left) and he throws a ****ing pick-six in garbage time, then gets taken out of the game.

How did you ever lose?

DTLB58 12-25-2013 09:04 AM

We had a guy one year pick 2 TE's (I think they were Dallas Clark and Tony G.) with his first two picks! And yes, won the league. :banghead:

This is why I only play in Total points leagues anymore.

Lost 5 weeks by a combined 13 points.

And the kicker - I was eliminated from playoff contention on a Thursday stat correction. Thought I was good all week, then got booted. They took a sack from SF's defense, I lost by one.

Won the consolation bracket and half my money back, though.

WHOO!
