illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition rates
BOSTON (AP) -- Gov. Deval Patrick has instructed state colleges and universities to allow some illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition rates to attend state colleges and universities.
In a letter sent Monday to the Board of Higher Education, Patrick said immigrants who obtain a work permit through a new federal program instituted by President Barack Obama would be eligible to pay the lower rates. Those rates cut in half the annual tuition to attend the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, for instance. The governor told reporters the directive is in line with an existing state policy that allows people with work permits and valid Massachusetts residency to qualify for in-state tuition. But he said it was only a first step toward comprehensive immigration reform. It wasn't immediately known how many immigrants might benefit from the Massachusetts program. :doh!: |
You'll be shocked to see this list...
"By his count, 12 states have laws allowing illegal immigrants to claim state residency and pay in-state tuition; this month, Maryland became the first to adopt such a law by popular vote. The others are California, Connecticut, Illinois, Kansas, New York, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin." http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/20/us...eges.html?_r=0 |

If the schools are down on enrollment, then it's money in their coffers. If the students are paying out of their pocket (family's pocket)...win/win. (Assuming work permit, etc.) They should only be allowed to attend if they're not displacing a U.S. citizen, either in-state or out-of-state.
BUT: IN NO WAY, SHAPE OR FORM SHOULD THEY RECEIVE ONE CENT OF TAXPAYER MONEY TO FUND THEIR EDUCATION. AND THEY SHOULD NOT RECEIVE PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT IN ADMISSION BASED ON THEIR ETHNICITY. PERIOD. |

This type of thing is usually hidden or not found out until later. Like Romneycare being bailed out with Medicaid funds. |

As long as their are basing it on the DREAM Act EO I don't have a huge problem with this. Those kids are pretty much Americans anyway.

yet children of military don't always get in-state tuition if they are in state because their parent has been stationed there? I know that when my daughter went to school in California they were not going to let her pay in-state tuition until she pulled out her state income tax form, luckily she had a job and paid state taxes or she would have had to pay out of state tuition.

Because this subject may or may not focus on – or at least mention, hint at or otherwise imply involvement with – people who may or may not be members of different racial, cultural or heritage groups than I, I no longer have any opinion at all on this subject. My mind and my conscience are pristine.

Given that illegals are going to be in this country, it is better for every one if those who have the academic ability become educated than not, especially in the STEM disciplines, The whole US economy will be more productive with a better educated more diverse workforce. The US would be better off if we quit worrying about how the pie is divided and focus on making the whole pie bigger.
