Pretty sure neither actually qualify as a MacGuffin.

It doesn't fit either of the criteria.

-Is the nature of the item interchangeable?

-Is the nature of the item irrelevant to the plot?

If the answer to both is 'yes' it's a macguffin.

They're a long way from the contents of the briefcase in pulp fiction (we don't even know what it was, so obviously it doesn't MATTER what it was), or the diamonds in snatch (which could have been anything of high monetary value).

AssEaterChief 07-19-2017 09:42 PM

I can't wait for this!

I'm glad they waited as long as they did, better chance it will be a solid movie.

This has easily been my most anticipated film of this year (for quite some time) The trailers have been aces . Just curious about the running time...I've heard/read its set at 163 minutes . Not that is a bad thing at all because I trust the director. Has anyone else read conflicting reports?

Bowser 08-30-2017 07:14 PM

Damn, Jared Leto killed that.

This is going to be great.

sully1983 09-27-2017 09:57 AM

Some film critics have already seen this and are blown away by it. Some of them even calling it a "masterpiece". God I can't wait!

He's a great actor. I recently rewatched Lord of War - his performance in that was Oscar worthy.

I'm going to see this tonight with the wife. Pretty pumped.

I plan on seeing it at a matinee tomorrow. Can't wait.

mnchiefsguy 10-06-2017 09:39 PM

Watched the Final Cut of the original last night.

Gonna see it on the Grand Screen with DTSx tomorrow night.

Frazod 10-07-2017 03:39 PM

I enjoyed it a lot. Not as much as the original, but that's a tough act to follow.

The good:

Well made and well acted. Obviously breathtaking special effects. Thoughtful story that, while a times bit predictable, takes a nice twist at the end. I particularly liked the relationship between the main character and his girlfriend, which I won't elaborate on. Enough nods to the original to be nostalgic without being duplicative. And look for Part III, because it definitely sets up another sequel.

The not so good:

It was probably a bit too long and a little too in love with itself. The score was often too loud and at times a bit jarring - I found myself missing Vangelis' work quite a bit. That's probably my biggest complaint. And the primary villain paled in comparison to Hauer's Roy Batty, but again, those are big shoes to fill. Leto was excellent as usual, but I wish he'd been in the movie a bit more.

Certainly a better follow-up to the originals than the new Alien stuff is.

Anyway, it mostly rocked. Definitely passed the I-Don't-Feel-Cheated test. I recommend it.

unlurking 10-07-2017 06:52 PM

Now I know there's a twist! :cuss:

It really is amazing how well it's held up.

Yet everybody gobbles up whatever overblown labyrinthine crap Nolan churns out like the theater is passing out free money.

Anybody else prefer the workprint version of the original? I've always though that the unicorn dream ruined the other cuts.

It's not mainstream sci-fi and never has been. The original flopped in 82. Personally, it took me several years before I liked it. I hated it as a kid.

I think WB gambled it was a more popular property than it actually is.

Not judging it's quality, just it's popularity amongst the masses.

Nolan certainly has a fan base (I’m a fan, BTW).

But the studio knew that this film wouldn’t survive the summer releases, so they released it in October, knowing that it wouldn’t be a box office hit but a possible awards contenders, which would push DVD, On Demand and streaming sales.

Another problem is most of the 20-somethings have probably never heard of the original. 35 years is a long time to wait for a sequel.

You really should try to see it on the big screen. It's worth it.

Dune needs to be an HBO miniseries. Too much material for a single movie.

They really should let me approve the script, too, because if anybody ****s it up again I'm going on a homicidal rampage. :#

I thought it was very good and visually stunning. The wife didn't care for it but that probably had a lot to do with the unnecessary length of it.

My experience exactly. I can't really think of any scene or character that will stick in my brain the way the original did but that's really because the original obviously broke so much creative ground. It was really ahead of its time.

mnchiefsguy 10-09-2017 09:58 PM

****ing epic. No other way to describe it.

Wow. Just wow.

So glad I re-watched the first one before seeing it. It is not necessary, but I feel like it really enhanced the experience.

Ryan Gosling was excellent...wait, did I just ****ing say that?

Whole cast was great, script was great...just a fantastic sci-fi masterpiece all around.

If you have seen the first one you should have known what to expect right?

Although the original is 2 hours, it's still pretty slow paced.

These are not action films by any means, although they do contain a few action scenes

sully1983 10-10-2017 09:24 AM

The budget is damn near 200 million dollars. A shame its flopping at the box office though(no way it'll make back its budget) . oh well, I applaud the studio for giving the director the chance to make this film .

It cost $150 million to make and with Foreign income after 3 days of its release, earned $83 million.

It'll at least break even, then earn additional revenues On Demand, Streaming and DVD/Blu Ray sales.

WB seems to be willing more than most to take a chance on these big budget 'artist movies' which I applaud them for.

Another they did that was good but flopped was 'Cloud Atlas'

The AI girl got way too much screen time. I know that plot thread is there for a reason (to draw a parallel to replicants and what it is that makes someone human) but they played that card a little too much, got tiring.

(without spoilers) wasn't it incredibly stupid of them to visit the girl at the end? Wouldn't be hard for anyone to figure out why Decker and him stopped there when the entire point of everything was to keep it a secret..

Couldn't hurt. I've seen it enough times that I didn't need to. Although I did watch the original with the wife after we got home from seeing the new one.

As I said before, the original still holds up remarkably well and is better than the sequel. But the sequel is also awesome.

Movie will end up between $80-$90mm stateside and foreign of another $100-$120mm.

The production was last in line so the $110-$130mm actually deposited will become around $65-$80mm for the producers. Even with ancillaries they'll end up losing $40-$50mm on this one.

the trailer for Star Wars alone shit on Blade Runner. BR was good tho.

Yeah, definitely a slow burn. This is not for the Fast 'n Furious in Space crowd. This is right up there with the original. Not familiar with Villeneuve, but this felt very Kubrik-esque. Will definitely have to check out the rest of his work.
