Broncos modify Manning's contract

Broncos mortgaging their future? Of course, they are being often chosen to make it to the Super Bowl, but still interesting and after this window closes, their salary cap situation will likely hurt.

Broncos reportedly gain 2013 cap space in Manning contract

The Denver Broncos reportedly gained some salary cap flexibility over the next two years from the alterations made to quarterback Peyton Manning's contract last week.

The Broncos requested the change to insure themselves against having to pay Manning's $20 million salary in 2014 in the event he can't play because of a non-neck injury that might be suffered this season.

The new contract doesn't change Manning's pay and is not a restructured deal in the traditional sense, but the league's treatment of Manning's contract does change, Yahoo! Sports reported.

The contract Manning originally signed in 2012 included a $20 million salary for 2013 and 2014. Under the new deal, Manning gets a $10 million salary advance in exchange for his base salaries in 2013 and 2014 being lowered to $15 million each season.

Citing a source with knowledge of the contract details, Yahoo! Sports reports that the $10 million advance will be treated like a signing bonus and prorated over four seasons. The net result of that? Manning's cap number reportedly gets reduced by $2.5 million in 2013 in 2014, then rises by $2.5 million in 2015 and 2016.

With the Broncos still possibly in the hunt for free agents such as Charles Woodson, the extra cap space this year could turn out to be important after all.

Wow, they are going full Chiefs.

He won't last the season. Chiefs will win the West.

So, I guess I'm unsure about this. If Peyton stays there one more year and the Broncos CUT him, they will get a pretty big salary cap hit, something in the range of $20 million most likely. If he RETIRES, does the same thing happen? What happens to the teams responsibilities on the signing bonuses, etc.. Do they a) disappear, b) accelerate, c) stay the same, possibly spread out over three or more years?

The insurance won't cover his neck because it needs another surgery.

The Broncos KNOW that they're doing. A few years ago, when the Chiefs went 10-6 and won the division, the Donx were in a total free fall. Just a few years later, they are back-to-back AFC West Champs, have Manning and are loading up for a serious Super Bowl run. Wish the Chiefs "sucked" as much.

Yep. Especially if you are the Chiefs, who win AFC West Titles and still can't win a mother ****ing playoff game.

That will all end, well, never.

Wasted years off his life to come back and have his balls disappear in the postseason again

Hilarious.

They could have done this months ago and held on to Dumervil.

Or, they could have screwed Dumervil over, then done it, and signed a FA or two.

They pick the worst of the three options.
