Interesting. Don McLean has NEVER said the song was about Holly. It has just been speculated. McLean has never said what HE wrote the song about.

Also I was under the impression that Flacks song was about Billy Joel....but I have been wrong before.

That may be, but American Pie is iconic and had more of an effect on pop culture.
