If you're a huge TOOL fan...
...shouldn't you know about Danny Carey?
I stopped by the liquor store today and the guy tending the place was wearing a TOOL t-shirt. I asked him about his shirt and he said he's a huge fan. We chatted a while and I mentioned that Danny Carey is from Paola and that I played basketball against him in summer leagues at Bell Recreational Center in KCK. The dude was completely baffled. Danny who? |
ROFL Not a huge fan obviously.
|
A childhood friend of mine stepdad was cousins with the guy. They had closets full of TOOL gear, all signed, drums that where signed, all kinds of shit.
All 3 of the brothers now listen to country. WTF! |

You could show a picture of Adam Jones to Tool fans and 8 out of 10 of them wouldn't recognize him.

Which is funny. |
I was really hoping this was some kind of announcement on the new album.
|
I've convinced myself there will never be one.

I'm not sure I buy the lawsuit stuff. I think that's a nice spin on what is Maynard being still relatively disinterested in the Tool project.
I do think there'll be a new Tool album in a few years, but the longer they wait the more pressure they put on themselves - the more they adopt a mindset of "we have to make a great album" vs just making an album and it turning out to be great (which would be preferable for creativity's sake). |
BTW. Danny Carey is filling in for Primus drummer "Herb" Alexander during their fall tour. That would be great to see!

Oh! And another BTW... Primus initially wanted Stewart Copeland on drums for the fall tour. He wasn't available.
|
Oh and for what it's worth I think you can be a "huge fan" of a band or group without knowing all their names, where they're from, what cables they like to use and who their first girlfriend was.
I would consider myself a "huge fan" of Widespread Panic but can't give you all the members rundowns. |

Danny Carey > Neil Peart

He's better in my opinion, and its really not close. Neil doesn't do much for me, although there's no denying he's one of the elite drummers. Still, I find Tool's music much more inspiring than Rush's, and that's no doubt colored my view. |

There are VERY few rock/metal music fans that even know what a poly-rhythmic drummer is. :thumb: |
I wouldn't agree that Danny Carey is one of the few exceptional poly-rhythmic drummers either.
Carmine Appice is very good, as is Bill Bruford, Roger Taylor, and Frank Zappa. If you want contemporaries of Carey, there's always Mike Portnoy. |
As a long time drummer, here is my list:
1a) Steve Gadd (unbelievable ability to play any style). 1b) Tony Williams - same as Steve Gadd. 2) Danny Carey - Ridiculous ability to tighten up polyrhythmic measures. 3) Stewart Copeland - Perfected the "reggae" style of drumming that is still the benchmark. 4) Neil Peart - Unbelievably fast hands and feet. 5) Buddy Rich - Could do with one drum that others can't do with five. |
Somehow I knew you were a drummer. :D

I'd say many ppl are HUGE fans of bands but don't really know that much about them. They'll know every album but never take the time to learn the behind the scenes stuff. I'm pretty much like this. I'm a big Flaming Lips fan, but after knowing they're from Oklahoma and Wayne Cohen is their lead, I couldn't tell you much else about them.
Liken it to someone being a huge fan of a movie, they could tell you the entire plot and the cast, but don't know who wrote the script or score. Unless you're a huge movie buff and/or are more involved in the art than just watching films, many won't seek out and retain all that info. Or someone may really like Van Gogh, Dali, Picasso. You can see him in any given college bedroom, but that person couldn't tell you where he was from or when he lived or why he painted what he painted. Anyways, if someone told me their favorite band was Tool, I'd think there's a 90% chance they don't really listen to that much music and/or the other stuff they listen to is mainstream crap. Tool is awesome, but they're kinda like Pink Floyd as a "go to" favorite of Gen Y. |
I know where Dali is from. I spent a a couple days in his hometown when I was vacationing on the Catalan coast. ;)

Because what is older is automatically better? I'm no drum expert, but I know a lot of drummers who would agree with that statement. I know many drummers who think Neil is god and I've heard others call him a 'side show'. |
maybe he was just playing dumb because he wasn't impressed with your "well I know one of the guys in tool" story

Tool is great, but they have such an annoying fanbase.

No worries. I love their sound, just cant stand Geddy Lee's voice. If Rush had a singer like Maynard I'd probably be a huge fan.
|
That's usually the sentiment. Understandable too. There really is no middle ground with a voice like that.
