I'd say many ppl are HUGE fans of bands but don't really know that much about them. They'll know every album but never take the time to learn the behind the scenes stuff. I'm pretty much like this. I'm a big Flaming Lips fan, but after knowing they're from Oklahoma and Wayne Cohen is their lead, I couldn't tell you much else about them.

Liken it to someone being a huge fan of a movie, they could tell you the entire plot and the cast, but don't know who wrote the script or score. Unless you're a huge movie buff and/or are more involved in the art than just watching films, many won't seek out and retain all that info. Or someone may really like Van Gogh, Dali, Picasso. You can see him in any given college bedroom, but that person couldn't tell you where he was from or when he lived or why he painted what he painted.

Anyways, if someone told me their favorite band was Tool, I'd think there's a 90% chance they don't really listen to that much music and/or the other stuff they listen to is mainstream crap. Tool is awesome, but they're kinda like Pink Floyd as a "go to" favorite of Gen Y.

I know where Dali is from. I spent a a couple days in his hometown when I was vacationing on the Catalan coast. ;)

There are VERY few rock/metal music fans that even know what a poly-rhythmic drummer is.

:thumb:

For reference, if anyone's curious as to what polyrhythmic drumming is. As bland as this is, it gets to the point.

ROFL That's laughable. My two favorite bands, my two favorite drummers, but only stupid kids would even make that claim.

Why?

Because what is older is automatically better?

I'm no drum expert, but I know a lot of drummers who would agree with that statement. I know many drummers who think Neil is god and I've heard others call him a 'side show'.

maybe he was just playing dumb because he wasn't impressed with your "well I know one of the guys in tool" story

Tool is great, but they have such an annoying fanbase.

He's better in my opinion, and its really not close.

Neil doesn't do much for me, although there's no denying he's one of the elite drummers. Still, I find Tool's music much more inspiring than Rush's, and that's no doubt colored my view.

Yeah, that was kind of a shitty thing to say. Clearly I get emotional over my Rush. Lol

MTG#10 08-28-2014 02:54 PM

No worries. I love their sound, just cant stand Geddy Lee's voice. If Rush had a singer like Maynard I'd probably be a huge fan.

Mr. Flopnuts 08-28-2014 02:56 PM

That's usually the sentiment. Understandable too. There really is no middle ground with a voice like that.
