Dead Space 3
Hits Tuesday. Loved 1 and 2 both. Can't believe we don't have a thread on this already, I know I'm not the only one that did.
I'll add some video and stuff later on, and I'm sure there'll be some interesting talk about the co-op mode and the crazy number of available microtransactions at launch, but this initial post is just about the pre-order from Amazon. They have a deal with EA where you get $20 in credit when you pre-order certain EA games. DS3 is included in that deal. Link for PC is http://www.amazon.com/Dead-Space-3-Pc/dp/B0050SWTS8 Believe that's for a boxed-copy (the deal is also valid for PS3 and 360), but I can wait a couple of extra days for some Amazon credit (assuming you can't just download it through origin once you get your codes from Amazon). Okay, the story so far: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/aEVmDaDM5xw?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
I played the demo a few days ago -- Loved it. It is a big more "shootbang" but I don't mind it. Atmosphere is still there.
Coop seemed really fun. I'll be buying it Day 1. I started up a new game of Dead Space 2 last Sunday. I'm on Chapter 7 now and loving every minute of it. The sound design in these games is unmatched. |
Also, microtransactions have been revealed

And here's the mostly-crappy bizarre phil collins inspired trailer I saw during The Following on Monday that made me go "oh shit" with the realization that a game I want is out in a week:

Some demo gameplay from several months back:

I'm working my way through DS2 at the moment so I'll be able to start DS3 when it arrives next month.

This dude's ****ing hilarious:

Got about 25 minutes into 2, and uninstalled. Nothing about the gameplay was bad as I saw it, but I could.not.look at it. The motion sway was sickening to me. I'm a pretty avid gamer, and only this and zombie driver made me have motion sickness. Couldn't do it. Kinda sucks too cause I was amped up to be scared~

well.. the way I remember it was sway throughout the first part of the game, no settings could change it, so I uninstalled.

Just got my copy, haven't loaded it yet. Some news today: they've announced that the first story DLC, entitled "Awakening" will be available in March for $10, and will be available on Origin, meaning that it looks like, for the first time in the series, story DLC will be available on the PC.
Review-wise, game informer loved it: Quote:

Cinemablend has a round-up of reviews here. As the title says, they range from "Joyless Slog" to "Magnum Opus", from losing what made Dead Space special to the being the best in the series to date.
Looking forward to seeing for myself... |
Was too streamlined, never got into this series. I hated the over the shoulder camera...Probably the main reason I couldn't get into it.

Here's the microtransactions available on origin:
Marauder Pack (4.99) Marauder Suit and AL-9 Clearcutter Bot Accelerator (4.99) Decreases bot harvesting time 50% Bot Personality Pack (4.99) Gives bot voice and personality, apparently changes based on what you do with them Bot Capacity Upgrade (4.99) Doubles the amount of resources bot delivers Sharpshooter Pack (4.99) Sharpshooter Suit and SMP-90 Sharpshooter Tundra Recon Pack (4.99) Tundra Recon Suit and Aegis VII Survivalist Tau Volantis Survival Kit (14.99) Gives you Bot Accelerator, Marauder, Sharpshooter and Tundra Recon packs Sounds cool, but damn...$5 each. At least the Survival Kit's 4 for $15. But still. Damn. You could spend $25 on day 1 microtransactions (or $30 if you're not savvy enough to buy the Survival Kit instead of the individual packs). |
I'm a bit disappointed with the game so far. I've only played about an hour of it. I don't like shootouts with other humans. It feels less like a survival horror this time around. BUT...I'm not far into it, and I've read some reviews stating that it gets better later on.

My one complaint is the weapons bench is pretty complex. I made a gun not knowing at all what it would do, invested parts and broke down other guns just to have a gun that, in jedi terms, just force pushes. No damage done, nothing, just knocks them backwards. Pretty upsetting.

I never played 1 or 2 so my girlfriend got me Dead Space 1 for Valentine's Day, I'm excited to break it out and start getting into the story. It makes sense that a third would be the weakest of the bunch, happens with most games that reach their third installment. The original theme and ideas that made the franchise usually get made over into something that is supposed to be better but rarely is.

3 is more of an action game, whereas 1 and 2 were more horror/survival. Just my $.02.

According to EA and Visceral that's a rumor, debunked on IGN.com.

The weapon bench is the greatest weapon building system Ive seen in a game. Sorry about your luck, but it sounds like you never played any of the previous Dead Space games, or else you would know what the Force Gun does for you. It obliterates small enemies, and blasts big groups of them back so you dont get overwhelmed. The game has a weapon test arena in the main menu, I strongly recommend entering this, tinkering with your weapons and testing them out. The amount of badassery you can create at the bench is ridiculous. I love all of the Dead Space stuff. For anyone just getting into it, I recommend hitting up Netflix and checking out the films Dead Space: Downfall, and Dead Space: Aftermath. Downfall leaves off in the moments where the Kellion is about to dock with the Ishimura, practicly the opening scene in Dead Space 1. Aftermath bridges the gap, and gives a bit more story leading up to Dead Space 2. Dead Space 3 has been kick-ass so far, and I absolutely love the casting of Simon Templeman (Kain from the Legacy Of Kain Series) to voice the main antagonist. Pretty awesome trilogy of games. |

Looks great. I was a bit disappointed with their cliffhanger after the credits, so its good to know that there will be more action with Isaac.
