Scotch and Bourbon drinkers - what is your favorite?
Was just gifted a bottle of Glenmorangie 18 Year Extremely Rare. Can't wait to crack it. I'm usually a Oban, Macallan or Talisker guy, but what a ****ing gift.
This is the time of year where I pretty much exclusively drink scotch and bourbon, and ignore the beer - and I'm always looking to try something new. What's your favorite? As far as bourbon is concerned, I'm a big fan of Black Maple Hill. Very reasonable at $40 a bottle. |
Oban and Macallan are my higher quality favorites.
My go-to drink is Glenfiddich 12 yr old. |
CC&7
I dnt drink very often. But when I do. Thats all I will drink. I never have tried scotch. Maybe I will try a small bottle of Chivas & 7 for news years eve. |

I love Macallan, but IMO Oban tastes like Anbesol.

The only bottle I've been able to get my hands on was two years after I had put my name on a list, and someone didn't claim theirs. |

I'm not a big Chivas guy but the 21 is excellent:

The employee was able to stifle his laugh, I wasn't. He very nicely told her that Pappy was extremely hard to get, and suggested a bottle of Colonel E.H. Taylor Barrel Proof if she wanted something rare. |

I like em all.

I like The Balvenie. For the price range ($45-$50) it's very good. I've been drinking Black Label lately as well. Cheap and tasty.
|
Scotch: Talisker is my favorite, but too $ for ordinary drinking
Bourbon: I'm not a bourbon drinker, but I'm a fan of Elmer T. Lee. |
Blantons is my go to Bourbon. If Im feeling cheap, Evan Williams Single Barrel is a darn good low price pick.
|
Well, sure, I like Macallan 18, but I can't afford that. (At a restaurant in New Orleans 4-5 years ago, I splurged on a glass of Macallan 25, which of course was sumptuous).
I have a collection of 12- and 15-year-old single malts -- Glenmorangie, Macallan, Longmorn, Aberlour, Clynelish, The Speyside. I think my favorite, affordable single malt, though, is Cragganmore. I like its complexity. I also like Redbreast Irish whiskey, and Woodford Reserve bourbon. |
Laphroaig Quarter Cask
|
Love me some Bookers bourbon. That's my go to.

I keep some JW Black and Glenlivet around as well. |

I've been having a scotch or whiskey craving lately. I haven't had any in months. But a glass of makers mark with an ice cube sounds pretty awesome right now.
|
I see Lagavulin hasn't been mentioned it is one of my favorites. Also Dry Fly Whiskey out of washington, friggen good as well.
|
Not a scotch drinker, but Makers Mark is my favorite bourbon. I like it straight, just to sip on.
|
It's a good night, so I broke into the Casa Silva Reserva Carmenere.....2006. Better than expected...
|
You all got me motivated so I went out and got a bottle of Glenlivet Nadurra (16 yr; cask strength, aged in bourbon barrel and non chill filtered).
Excited as hell to open it, but gonna wait until I wipe out my existing stock. |
The Macallan. I'm almost done with a bottle of the 18 year that I've been nursing for a year, and I've just cracked open a bottle of the Estate Reserve.
Yummy. The company I used to work for would have an open bar for their Christmas party and I'd always drink plent of the 12 year since that is what was available. |
Templeton Rye is now available in the KC area. Do yourself a favor and get a bottle.
|
Gotta be in the right mood for a true rye whiskey.
Y'know what? I think I am. Off to the mancave to mix myself an old-fashioned. I think I still have some bitters left. |
Some good stuff mentioned. I have a hard time finding Van Winkle stuff these days - I never see my old fave 'Lot B' bourbon or their 13 year old rye anymore - I've still got a couple bottles of the rye here, when it's gone, it's gone. Van Winkle joined up with the Sazerac folks, and their distribution is much wider - which means the treats tend to disperse quickly. Eh, I had fun while it lasted.
Luckily my 'day to day' bourbon supply is fine, and I happen to like Wild Turkey 'Rare Breed' for a bit of an upgrade. It's not that expensive @ Costco. Some of the spendier upscale Wild Turkey offerings are good, but at their price wasted on me I'm afraid. So Rare Breed it is. I also celebrate with Bushmill's 'Black' label Irish or Powers 12 year and I like most of your peaty Islay stuff when it comes to Scotch. I'm pretty easy to please. |

I'm no expert, but the best that I've ever had is "Macallan 18". Simply amazing.

Surprised this hasn't been played yet. |
Elijah Craig 18 year old bourbon. MMMMmmmmMMMMM!!
|
Not much to add to the discussion here, I drink Makers and Woodford Reserve as my everyday bourbon and Elmer T, Bookers, Makers 46 and Pappy on Special Occasions. If any of you all are history buffs a buddy of mine named Kristian Day just shot a documentary on the origins of Templeton Rye Whiskey. It sold out on Amazon, but you can buy it here:

Buffalo Trace . http://www.buffalotrace.com/our-bourbon.html
|
Scotch: Aberlour a'bunadh
Bourbon: Four Roses Small Batch I have tried just about everything I can find and these are my favorites. The Aberlour is a very unique scotch as each batch is different. They are always cask strength, but always different. my favorite was batch 40 but sadly, can't find that one anymore. My cabinet also regularly consists of: Macallan 18 Glenlivet 12, 15 French Oak, & 18 Aberlour 12 Balvenie 12 & 15 Johnnie Gold Bulliet Bourbon & Rye Crown Gentleman's Jack Jack Single Barrel |
I am drinking some Evan Williams as we speak...or type...or whatever. A great inexpensive bourbon. When I'm feeling saucy, I like
Knob Creek Bakers Woodford Reserve |
JIm Beam
Cutty Sark |
I'm drinking a $21 bottle of Buffalo Trace and a $200 bottle of Johhny Walker Blue tonight. Buffalo Trace wins and it's not even close.
|
I went looking for the Buffalo Trace tonight and they didn't carry it, so I am enjoying Makers and a La Gloria Cubana. Did a tour of the Makers' distillery a couple weeks back. If you are ever down near Danville it is worth a stop in.

I'm sure you have, but on the off chance you haven't the Elmer T. Lee and George T. Stagg are both brilliant. Myself I have the benefit of enjoying the irony of watching a killer lightening display whilst listening to an autobiography of Tesla while enjoying mine. There must be some irony there.

What are your thoughts on the Glenmorangie? I had the exact same bottle at one time and really enjoyed it. I know have a bottle of the Balvenie Caribbean Cask. I have not quite decided what I think of that yet. |

This is the thread I was looking for. Getting ready to go get some single malt, obviously not in the $500/bottle range.

Not a big Scotch fan... My choice is Crown Reserve. I know, I know.. it's a blended whiskey. But it's still my choice.
