It's actually books 4 and 5 (not books 3 and 4) that you want to read together as one big book. The reason is that book 4 focuses on one set of characters, and book 5 focuses on a different set of characters, but they take place at the same time. It's a weird construct, and they make more sense and you can understand the timing of events better if you read those two books together. There are published chapter lists on line that tell you the best way to do it. It basically means you read like 5 chapters in book 4, then 5 or so in book 5, then 5 or so in book 4, etc. Trust me, that is the best way to do it.

Book 1 and the first season of the show are very closely aligned, though I will say that there is a key mystery that is hinted at in book 1 that has not been dealt with on the show yet. It is fairly subtle in the book hints, but the show ignored it for the most part. Mainly that is because the biggest hints come through in flashbacks to earlier events, and the show did not do those flashbacks. It would be hard to show them on TV without giving away the mystery. If you want to know what the mystery has to do with, it is:

Spoiler!

Book 2 and season 2 did start to diverge more, and the divergence has grown larger with each season of the show with the biggest divergences happening last season (season 4). It is also fairly obvious that season 5 is going to diverge wildly from the books and they may end up being two different stories in the end because the show may not wait for GRRM to finish the books and is going to pass him up here soon. In fact if they do not release book 6 before next season of the show, I may wait to watch next season until after I get a chance to read book 6.

There's no way book 6 is coming before April. Publishing dates are set many more months in advance than that.

You have to assume that the next season is mostly written, while the book is obviously not. They're going to have to just go their own route fairly soon.

I suspect that the ending of the show will have little in common with the eventual ending to the book series.

(By ending I mean the last couple of books and the last couple of seasons...)

So I'll probably go ahead and watch the TV series.

You aren't supposed to when they get to ADwD but they won't allow that to happen.

Thanks for straightening me out. I always get confused on which book is what and where in the show things are. Weird since I was just reading the books for the second time just a few months back. Guess it is time to start a third reading so I get the stuff straight.

I'm about halfway though the first book. It's good.. Great, actually. I wish I had more time to read it.

When is the show coming back?

Apparently the teaser was released on Tuesday through a brand-new promotional website called ThreeEyedRaven.com. And it was a pain in the ass to be able to watch the teaser at all ... various outlets report that you had to subscribe to receive the video, which could only be watched on your cellphone and only watched once, and you weren't allowed to take any screenshots of it. Crikey.

Of course, because this is the age of the magic of the Internet, a user from Reddit called strongjoe was able to put the footage together on a YouTube clip for all of us who missed the memo about this teaser to see.

Yes, the general reaction most likely is ... WTF was that?? But sharp-eyed Internet nerds pointed out that if you look hard enough, you'll be able to see Sansa, Tyrion, Cersei peeking out behind a window, perhaps in captivity (dun dun dun), Arya rowing a boat, and a book being shut.

DONE! WOW! HOLY SHIT!

brienne vs hound
oberyn vs mountain
wildings vs black
giants and skeletons and white walkers....oh my......

I'ma watch this whole damn series all over again!

am I stupid to wonder if hound & mountain are dead?

ThaVirus 12-17-2014 12:51 PM

I doubt the Hound will die. He's got some unfinished business to tend to with the Mountain.

Not that this series is one that I trust to do "the right thing".. But I think that's too good a storyline to pass up.
