Let's talk about a few of the interesting matchups we'll see in 2015.

It's a dead slow time for football discussion right now and I figured this would be a good way of sparking up some Chiefs talk. Maybe draw in some rivals for a little heated discussion. I have some free time and thought this would be a fun way to waste some of it.

The upcoming schedule will give us some really interesting matchups that will play a huge role in the success of the team in those games. Let's talk about a few of them. So the OP doesn't get super long (and therefore unreadable) I'll be going week by week in looking at what I see as the pivotal matchups each game are.

Here we go

Week 1

Justin Houston -vs- Derek Newton

This has a potential to get really ugly for Newton and if Houston is there, he's gonna flat out destroy this poor guy. I wouldn't be surprised to see 50 start the year with a monster game of 3+ sacks in the opener. Mallett is a statue that's holds the ball too long and our secondary should be able to blanket their receivers. If the rest of the defense is at full strength, Houston is gonna be a destroyer of worlds in Houston.

Marcus Peters -vs- Deandre Hopkins

This is gonna be interesting if Sean Smith is indeed suspended week 1. It's a great matchup that will show us what we have in the kid and I think he is up to the task right away. I bet Peters has already watched a bunch of film on Hopkins and knows how he's gonna attack him. I can't wait to watch these two battle. It's gonna be worth the ticket price. I'll be SHOCKED if Peters doesn't get his first pick in the opener.

JJ Watt/Jadaveon Clowney -vs- Eric Fisher/ Ben Grubbs

If Clowney is ready to go, this could be a monstrous test for our guys week 1. JJ Watt makes a living putting guys on sportscenter and Clowney is penciled in at ROLB behind him. If Clowney is healthy and focused, it could get scary if Fisher isn't improved a lot since last year. It will be interesting to see if they need to have a TE help and keep Sherman back to chip or not as the game goes on. All in all, if the OL can do their job against that front 7 (hopefully with a little help by Romeo of not bringing the heat and forcing Clowney into coverage all game) I think we win this game cause our defense should hold their offense in check all day.

Jeremy Maclin -vs- Kareem Jackson

This should be a good test for both players. Jackson really came on last year and is a solid corner that Maclin will need to be on the top of his game to make plays against. They have similar long speed, so Maclins gonna need to beat him with precise routes to win individual matchups. If Maclin can have a productive day (a lot of that depends on the OLs ability to block that front 7), we should be able to
Score enough to win.

Other note able matchups:

Allen Bailey -vs- Xavier Su'a-Filo
Phillip Gaines -vs- Cecil Shorts

You forgot Kush vs. Wilfork.

I was going to, but I'm still not positive Kush starts at center, though I hope he does.

I also see us dedicating Fisher/Grubbs to Clowney/Watt, so that leaves Kush able to double with Morse (who I see winning the RG spot) on Wilfork. With Jared Crick probably starting at the other end and Whitney Mercilus at the other OLB spot, I don't see a lot of situations where Kush will need to single block Wilfork, but if he does those instances will surely be worth watching. Even at his age, Wilfork is a good barometer type matchup for Kush.

I know you are talking week 1 but JFC the matchups vs GB are brutal.

Nelson/Cobb/Parker/Montgomery vs our DB's

Packers very good OL vs Houston/Hali/Ford

Matthews/Peppers vs Fisher/Stephenson

Lacy vs our rush D

And Rodgers vs our D

Horrible matchup for us

I have a bad feeling we're going to get flat out destroyed in Houston week 1.

Smiff is going to be picking a lot of that Tifway 419 Bermuda Grass out of his facemask.

Smith better not come out and play like he did against the Titans last year.

RunKC 06-24-2015 09:37 AM

Gameplan vs Houston is gonna be quick screen passes to Maclin/DAT/Kelce/JC.

No way we hold onto the ball that long in the pocket

Reerun_KC 06-24-2015 09:41 AM

Week 2, Sutton vs Manning.... It hasn't been pretty for the last 2 years...

Could this be the year we get that illusive sack and win?

This whole team needs to play better. Coaching has to be a lot more prepared also.

He did ok last year. Our offense just can't keep up. How many FGs did we force in KC? We only lost by 7 in Denver.
