Have you priced Thunderbolt RAID controllers? Yikes....

Your current machine is a Powermac G5. Not a Mac Pro. You can't upgrade beyond Snow Leopard because it doesn't have an Intel processor. That also limits you quite a bit regarding Adobe Creative Suite and other software. Upgrading from that to the new Mac Pro and OS X 10.9 is going to be a huge upgrade for you....

Absolutely non of that is compatible with the new model. Upgrading will likely cost him ~$3K just for the new unit, at least 2 external HD enclosures for his current SATA drives, Thunderbolt dongles, HDMI to DVI dongle, external optical drive, etc.

And I know many people in that same boat. What's going to happen, is that current Mac Pro owners are going to hang on to their old tower units absolutely as long as possible, because the new system means starting over from scratch. Which is exactly Apple's intent. It's ****ing horseshit and it's going to create serious animosity toward Apple above and beyond what's already there.

Couple that with Adobe's new "Rental" licensing model, and you have yourself an entire industry of graphics folks that are ****ing pissed off at the world with no clue on how to pay for their next generation of hardware and software.

Ugh. They're going in the opposite direction from what I was hoping for. We still have tons and tons of Freehand files that we need to use, so we're hanging on to our old Mac, still, even though it's a slow piece of shit now. I was hoping we'd get more backwards compatibility with future iterations, not less.

5S for sure. The C isn't worth picking up.

If you did a standard update you would not have lost your texts. Sounds like you did a full clean install. If that is the case I don't know if restoring an old backup will work for you or not.

You're best bet is to attack any local backups that you've got. There are a few utilities out there that will let you browse through them as well as some commercial tools. Internet Evidence Finder does a pretty slick job of it.

Oh, give me a little more credit than that dude. I misspeak in part. It won't go all the way to Mountain Lion but it might go to Lion. I inherited it from the video guy who drove it for a few years.

It's an early Intel Mac Pro. There are some hacks that appear to work but it's a work machine and I'm not going to mess around with that stuff on something that's mission critical. I'm hoping that it's old enough that they'll sell it to me for cheap when the replacement arrives.

In related news, the window opened up to go ahead and order the current machine so I took it. In spite of the older Xeon processor, it should still be quite a beast.

Built it out with two 512GB SSDs (one for OS X and one for Win7), two 2TB spinny drives for data, 32 GB of RAM, the stock 1GB video card (I'm not using this for video editing), an eSATA card, a USB 3.0 card and two Thunderbolt Displays.

When I was at the store doing some poking around to see how easy it would be to swap the fourth drive in and out (super easy) they said that they could "put me on the waiting list" for the new Mac Pro so who the hell knows when I'd be getting it after it was announced. I know that every TV station and video production house in town are already on the list.

Okay. It's D(ecision) Day!

Moto X
Galaxy S4
iPhone 5s

Yes, the iPhone is still in the running. Just my resistance to change...lol.

Anyway, still looking to see if anyone has any info on the Moto X. I think it's one I could design if I was with AT&T, but I'm not, so my choices are simply black or white.

This is a good review on the Moto X - http://www.androidcentral.com/moto-x-review

Still against the HTC?

I'm really leaning towards the Moto X. I'm weary about going with a company's first try into a market though.

Also, all of the reviews I've read of the HTC One on various sites kind of dog the camera, which is a more important option for me.

Uh...Motorola has been making cell phones for ages.
