THE FOLLOWING

THE FBI estimates there are currently over 300 active serial killers in the United States. What would happen if these killers had a way of communicating and connecting with each other? What if they were able to work together and form alliances across the country? What if one brilliant psychotic serial killer was able to bring them all together and activate a following? Welcome to THE FOLLOWING, the terrifying new thriller from creator/executive producer Kevin Williamson (“The Vampire Diaries,” “Dawson’s Creek,” the “Scream” franchise). When notorious serial killer JOE CARROLL (James Purefoy, “Rome”) escapes from death row and embarks on a new killing spree, the FBI calls former agent RYAN HARDY (Emmy-nominated actor Kevin Bacon, “X-Men: First Class”) to consult on the case. Having since withdrawn from the public eye, Hardy was responsible for Carroll’s capture nine years ago, after Carroll murdered 14 female students on the Virginia college campus where he taught literature. Hardy is a walking textbook of all-things Carroll. He knows him better than anyone; he is perhaps Carroll’s only psychological and intellectual match. But the Ryan Hardy who broke the Carroll case years ago isn’t the same man today. Wounded both physically and mentally by his previous pursuit of this serial killer, it’s been a long time since Hardy has been in the field. This investigation is his redemption, his call to action. In contrast to nine years ago, Hardy isn’t calling the shots on this case. He works closely with an FBI team, which includes all-business and tough-as-nails JENNIFER MASON (Jeananne Goossen, “The Vow,” ALCATRAZ) and young, razor-sharp MIKE WESTON (Shawn Ashmore, “X-Men”). The team considers Hardy to be more of a liability than an asset. But Hardy proves his worth when he uncovers that Carroll was covertly communicating with a network of killers in the outside world. It quickly becomes obvious that he has more planned than just a prison escape, and there’s no telling how many additional killers are out there. The FBI’s investigation leads Hardy to CLAIRE MATTHEWS (Natalie Zea, “Justified”), Carroll’s ex-wife and mother of the criminal’s 10-year-old son, JOEY (newcomer Kyle Catlett). Close during Hardy’s initial investigation, Hardy turns to Claire for insight into Carroll’s next move. The tension rises when Carroll’s accomplices kidnap his intended last victim from nine years ago. Hardy becomes ever more determined to end Carroll’s game when he realizes that this psychopath intends to finish what he started. The thriller will follow Hardy and the FBI as they are challenged with the ever-growing web of murder around them, masterminded by the devious Carroll, who dreams of writing a novel with Hardy as his protagonist. The reinvigorated Hardy will get a second chance to capture Carroll, as he’s faced with not one but a cult of serial killers.

The twist on this show is the reveal that Kevin Bacon's character is somehow, someway connected to all 300+ serial killers.

Lzen 05-15-2012 11:51 AM

Looks good. When does it air?

007 05-15-2012 11:00 PM

With Kevin Bacon in it, I will at least give it a chance.

Yep

Just remember, six degrees to Kevin Bacon doesn't work with TV shows.

As everyone who's watched the NFC championship knows, this premeires tomorrow...

Early word is that it's the best new show of the year (meaning 2012-2013 season).

aturnis 01-21-2013 09:22 PM

Caught the last ten minutes or so. Solid at that point.

Luckily for me(and anyone else who missed the premier), they are re-airing the premier Friday night..

Boiled Chicken 01-21-2013 09:31 PM

Great show. Definitely recommend

Nzoner 01-21-2013 09:31 PM

After watching the pilot tonight I'm interested enough that I've set the DVR to record the series.

007 01-22-2013 12:22 PM

and this was bumped just last night too.

Movie-ish catching a serial killer show ... creepy, disturbing, icky, morbid, if you like that sort of thing.

'Along Came A Spider' comes to mind ... if you saw that movie.

from my dupe thread ... maybe a mod can delete the other one.

Lzen 01-22-2013 01:18 PM

Pretty darn solid pilot. I'm definitely recording this series.

007 01-22-2013 01:19 PM

Loved every minute of it. I hope they can carry it out well.

keg in kc 01-26-2013 04:06 PM

Finally watched it. Not bad.

Ep 2 seemed a bit less than ep 1, but still not bad.

Exactly.

I thought the pilot, while good, was the usual type of pilot episode, filling in back story and setting up the series theme, etc...

Episode 2 they gunned the engine and took off. Reminds me in some ways of 24.

BWillie 02-03-2013 08:22 PM

Great show so far. .. Sorry about the repost

keg in kc 02-03-2013 08:29 PM

It was on the 2nd page, no biggie. Wasn't a lot of talk after last week's for some reason.

Baby Lee 02-03-2013 11:32 PM

Amazingly, the New York Post called upon an actual serial killer to review the show

I hope I'm wrong but I can't help but think that Weston is the inside guy for Joe...

It would explain that odd smile he had when Hardy first showed up at that briefing.

SNAFU 03-06-2013 09:43 AM

Anyone still watching this? There have been a few stretched scenes but, for the most part, I'm enjoying it.

keg in kc 03-06-2013 10:51 AM

Yeah, haven't watched this week's yet but I've kept up. Still like it.

DaveNull 03-06-2013 12:58 PM

Still watching. This show is essentially 24 with kidnapping and Kevin Bacon instead of terrorists and Kiefer Sutherland.

Tribal Warfare 04-13-2013 12:14 AM

The Paul/Jacob shit creeps me the **** out

Bowser 04-13-2013 12:09 PM

Ok, I've held on with this show, but the amount of common sense you have to suspend is just plain staggering. It's entertaining and all, but there are just those moments in each episode where I'm saying "Oh, come ON!!" to the TV.

I do think that Parker is a Joe Follower. Her, an/or Weston.

And Natalie Zea. Dammit, girl.

Does take a lot of "distancing from reality", but I am still watching.

BWillie 04-14-2013 07:10 PM

I like it. Itd entertainment. ...just dont try to waste your time "solving" the show and why they don't do certain things to catch Joe.

Nzoner 04-29-2013 09:47 PM

Wow what a finale.

mikey23545 04-29-2013 09:52 PM

Well, now we have an entire offseason to wonder if Clair is dead or not.

And Emma will pick up the torch...

007 04-29-2013 11:55 PM

I'm betting they are leaving it that way and not doing a second season

'The Following' Renewed: Fox Also Orders New Seasons Of 'New Girl,' 'The Mindy Project' And 'Raising Hope'

"The Following" has been renewed for a second season by Fox. The network has also ordered new seasons of "The Mindy Project," "New Girl" and "Raising Hope."

"From the very beginning, we felt Kevin Williamson and Marcos Siega had created a high-quality, edge-of-your-seat drama that could break from the pack, and it is exciting to see the audience responding,” Kevin Reilly, chairman of entertainment at Fox, said in a statement. “Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy have given us two of the most compelling characters on television and the entire cast is incredible. I’m delighted to have this thrill ride continue on Fox for another season."

I actually thought that was a perfect way to leave it. They actually told us how it would end when they were discussing "the manuscript" in the scene prior.

ChiefAshhole20 04-30-2013 01:55 PM

I thought the way it ended with Joe was pretty weak, but overall the first season was good

BlackHelicopters 04-30-2013 02:15 PM

Joe, somehow, is still alive. It's TV.

Okay I may watch the first episode next season but after one season down I just felt like it was a bit too over the top at times for my liking and that at times the writers got very lazy.

Baby Lee 04-30-2013 03:52 PM

Watching The Following is acceptable, but not if you aren't also watching Hannibal.

Hannibal is 100x the show The Following is.

I'm still going to watch it next season, but for me, the buildup (i.e. "oh we are just getting started." and "this is just the beginning.") had me excited for the show. Then Joe kind of went crackers. I get that they were trying to show that he was unraveling and losing control, but I enjoyed the methodical and calculated character in Joe. After such a build up in his character, he loses his composure, then loses control at the very moment all of his efforts and scheming are coming to a head because Hardy temporarily diffuses the situation by saying Poe sucks, critizing him and insulting his writing? I don't know it was just a little bit of a letdown for me.

Now (assuming Joe's dead), his followers will pick up the torch and continue their chapter of Joe's book I assume.

yes!
Hannibal! Hannibal!

frigging awesome.

Joe dying....dude....it was a BOAT house....jump into the water. so I was like...no WAY he's dead...and then they go and talk about dental records and DNA. no Joe....that's gonna hurt the show imo. the following is aight, but Hannibal....wow.

I agree, and the way Roderick went out was even worse. Roderick would have been a perfect character to carry the "torch" so to speak. I think it's likely Joe Carroll is still not dead, if he is dead, I really don't know what direction the show will go. Emma is not an interesting enough character. We don't know much about Ryan's slut neighbor, but she doesn't really seem that interesting either. This show loves flashbacks, and I think they should keep Joe and have flashbacks going back to his childhood and life before Claire about why he is the way he is.

Lzen 05-02-2013 11:17 AM

This show is so frustrating. They make so many stupid decisions. Uggghhh. Why do I continue watching?

DJJasonp 05-02-2013 02:17 PM

How many times can an FBI agent find who they are looking for - especially a child - and then easily get distracted by a noise and say "wait here.....I'll be right back...."

DaveNull 05-03-2013 05:28 AM

So that was a pretty disappointing finale. They never did explain why the FBI girl brought the Poe book to Joe when he was still locked up. The reality distortion that's required ("We can't trace the cell phone because it's being bounced through multiple servers") exceeds even 24.

rocknrolla 11-11-2013 12:53 PM

Watched the first season this weekend on Neflix. It was very entertaining, yet pretty far fetched. Season 2 could be questionable. I think it would have been great if it was just a one season show. From what I've read here, I gotta check out Hannibal.

Bowser 03-13-2014 09:12 PM

Anybody still watching this piece of shit? I'm not sure why I keep watching it off the DVIR. It's become so ludicrous that it is a caricature of itself.

If there is a real life threat like a Joe Carroll or any of the other crazies in this show, I sincerely hope our FBI/law enforcement officials are just a *tad* more sharp than the idiots portrayed in this show. I can suspend belief/reality with the best of them, but damn.
