What is the most obscure country from which you've met a person?

Don't count people you've met while traveling to obscure countries. What's the most unusual country from which you've met someone, while going about your normal business in the United States?

I was friends with a guy in college who was from The Gambia. Not just a Gambia, but THE Gambia. That's a small country.

The husband of a friend of mine is from Yemen, which is pretty unusual, and a client of mine once was from Bulgaria. I met someone once whose girlfriend was from the island of Truk, and I really wanted to meet her, but never got the chance.

I'd like to meet a Mongolian person at some point.

I rented out my house to a person I thought was a friend from The Gambia

Suffice to say you can take the man out of Africa but you can't take the Africa out of the man - He destroyed my place

A great friend of mine at KU was from Ghana. His name is Siaw Yaboah. He went by the nick-name of Kojo, which means "Monday born," in Ghana.

They have several dialects in Ghana and English is/was taught to the privileged. When Kojo came to KU he had to relearn English because he couldn't understand a word we said (and vice versa). He caught on really fast and busted all players in chess. He's now a successful engineer in California. Rock on Kojo!

The Franchise 11-08-2013 02:39 PM

Laos. But it's not really obscure because there is a large Laos population here in Northern California.

At one of my jobs there was a guy from Ghana and a guy from Somalia. The guy from Somalia was probably the most bigoted person I've ever met toward the guy from Ghana. He would call him "ditch digger" and "monkey" right to his face.
And the guy from Ghana would just sort of smile about it and never got mad.

DMAC 11-08-2013 02:42 PM

Actually quite a bit. I play soccer with quite a diverse and rotating crowd of foreigners.

I wouldn't think that a typical Somalian guy has a lot to be arrogant about.

No, nor would I. They both washed cars so, you know. But for whatever reason the Somalians held themselves up as superior.

A good rule of thumb is that if they border the Baltic, you want to see them naked.

I messed around years ago with a chick from Jordan.

She was a regular American girl, came here when she was young. But she liked to remind me that her dad was hardcore Muslim and if he caught us ****ing that he would disown her/kill her/kill me etc.

I have a lot of Laos friends here in DFW (surprisingly there are a lot of them here).

Guy that works at the convenience store by my house is Nepalese.

I was friends with a bunch of eastern Europeans in college (most were Albanian and Macedonian) and they had an Estonian friend (he was an acquaintance of mine).

In college, my roommate was from Iran. This was during the height of the Iranian hostage crisis. Boy, did he get shit everywhere he went.

Sad thing was, he was in a Jewish minority over in Iran and recently came to the U.S. to escape persecution over there. Poor guy - he was literally like a man without a country.

:cuss:

I've got a great story along those lines but I'll share it when I'm not typing with my thumbs on an iPhone.

That's one badass doctor, i wouldn't want to disagree with his diagnosis.

I'll expand on this as Dane did.

I'd say out of the three - one was super nice and loyal, one was ok, but not as sincere, one was nice but had a temper and then had a HUGE temper at company events, etc, while drinking. They were all related in some way or shape.

East German after the wall fell. Turkey. Chad. Hungry. Pakistan. Maybe a few more I don't remember.

We had a nanny from Kazakhstan back in 2010 (I think I've shared this story before).

And yes, she sang the "Bing Bong" song to my 2 year old daughter exactly same as Borat sang it.

LMAO

What is the most obscure country from which you've met a person?

Have coached football players from Armenia, Saudi Arabia, the Philippines, and Romania.

Oh and him and his friends had awesome shit.

Leather couches, nice electronics...

I would just get random calls for a couple years from him after he graduated.

When any of them left they just left. Took nothing. He would have them bring me the keys and I would clean their houses out. Everything in then was mine plus whatever deposit they got back if any.

Sweet gig for a guy just out of high school

Wow, it must be nice to be so cavalier with expensive things.

I've met a people from a lot of different countries, easily more than fourty, but mostly when I've been overseas.

Oddly enough, on my foray into North Korea I didn't meet any North Koreans.
