Somebody's gotta have the inside scoop on Google Fiber launching tomorrow..??

https://fiber.google.com/savethedate/

Live broadcast over YouTube tomorrow. Anybody have any early news on this? Will it be available all over the Metro? How long will the waiting list be?

Anybody know anything? I'm impatient.

All I can say is...

I can't tell you a damn thing :D

I hope it makes its way out to Blue Springs so i can tell comcast to take a hike.

So...when's it coming to Colorado? :)

Mr. Laz 07-25-2012 08:20 PM

they seem to be starting in a section of town that isn't very high dollar ... i wonder how many people will sign up.

BWillie 07-25-2012 09:12 PM

When are they getting to Olathe

ReynardMuldrake 07-25-2012 09:36 PM

Just based on all the research they did in the area, I'm pretty sure it's just going to be just KCMO and KCK to start. I really hope we don't have to wait too long before they expand their coverage area.

My understanding is that it will be KCK, and then KCPL customers, since they are using KCPL's infastructure (power poles, etc.) to run parts of the network. So if you are a KCPL customer, you should be good.

I cannot wait. This is going to be awesome.

It would be nice, but I doubt it. If you look at the research they did, I can't see them deploying it somewhere that's not on their map.

Hopefully they will start to expand soon though.

Some nice features.

•Service will deliver 1,000 Mbps downstream and upstream speeds
•Comes with 1 terabyte of cloud storage included
•Google Fiber Television supports many of the technology you'd expect, including multi-room DVR functionality and tablets/smartphones as remote controls.
•Google's "Network Box" black, square gateway comes with Wi-Fi
•DVR "Storage Box" looks exactly the same, comes with 2 terabytes of storage
•"TV Box" television set top is Bluetooth capable, turns every TV into a Wi-Fi extender.
•Nexus 7 included as remote control at no extra charge.

ZootedGranny 07-26-2012 10:59 AM

The pre-registration site was working prior to it being announced in the livestream, and fiber wasn't available in my neighborhood on the edge of KCMO proper.

They're actually planning on building it out on a demand basis, so hopefully it expands like a virus.

70 a month for the internet package, 120 for the internet & tv package? I'd just pay the extra 50 a month if they had ESPN.

You think $70 is high for a 1Gbit connection?

Plus up the value of your home by a little. Always good. And if at any point you decide you have the extra cash to get Google's packages, you can. Seems like a great deal.

ArrowheadHawk 07-26-2012 11:11 AM

So how long till this thing is across the country? How can google afford to do this? I read on another site it is going to cost them $3 - $8K per home to install.

They sold this as a cheaper but faster situation not a premium, elite service.

So yes, 70 bucks for the initial price is expensive no matter speed.

There is nothing planned for future rallies, yet.
Northland doesn't even get a token neighborhood.
A CS rep in chat told me their plan is to fiber all of KCK and KCMO by Sept. 2013.

It's all about the user base. Once you have the users you can always figure out a way to make money somehow.

Think about how many free websites get really popular, then switch to ad-supported or premium versions. They seem to do OK.

mnchiefsguy 07-26-2012 11:21 AM

Don't Comcast/Time Warner charge like $100 for their 50mbs package or something ridiculous? I have Knology and it's $70 for 50mbs and it's capped at 250gb/mo, and 160 total with shitty ass bronze package TV. I'd move to KC to get google fiber.

Yep. Having realtime TV watching habits of households is a data goldmine for advertising.

I don't have/need cable, so I think I'm sold on the $70 gigabit internet package.

Not so much by zip as physical neighborhoods. I'll try to get a better map of the initial rally areas.

Yeah, Google invested a ton of money (which they have a lot of) into this project right? I think it will pay off for them big time. I hope they spread to Tulsa sooner rather than later. It's a condensed town with a lot of people in a small area. Seems like it would be easy for them to connect up down here.

Deberg_1990 07-26-2012 11:44 AM

Pretty cool business model:

http://www.kansascity.com/2012/07/26...-plans-on.html

So no matter how badly the corner geek wants Internet speeds of one gigabit-per-second — 100 times faster than most broadband hook-ups — he won’t be able to get it unless about 10 percent of his neighbors also register for a Google hook-up.

Time Warner Cable became the principal television-subscription company in the market decades ago. It did so under a franchise agreement that gave it a virtual monopoly to sell cable TV, in part for a pledge to offer the service to nearly every home.

Since then, a deregulation of the industry has allowed other companies to sell hard-wired TV services in neighborhoods where old franchise holders such as Time Warner already offer services.

Such so-called overbuilders — Google now joins AT&T’s U-verse service and SureWest Communications among them — have certain disadvantages. They don’t just have to convince people to buy their services. They must also convince consumers to go through the hassle, and often installation expense, of switching from the incumbent cable provider.

But they also have some key advantages. For instance, they need only offer service where they see a profit. Outfits like Time Warner and Comcast Corp., on the other hand, were obligated by their franchise agreements to reach nearly every neighborhood — including those that pose geographic challenges or poorer areas where a significant percentage of residents are less likely to buy the most profitable subscriptions.

In that respect, there’s a certain savvy to Google’s rollout strategy. By only going into neighborhoods where enough consumers prove they’ll pay, the company builds in great efficiencies to building the network. No need to dispatch crews and rip up asphalt in pursuit of a handful of potential customers when Google can laser in on the most eager concentrations of subscribers

mr. tegu 07-26-2012 11:48 AM

Okay so I am not the most tech savy as far as speed, etc. What is so much better about Google Fiber than what we have here in the area now? And why is this such a big deal if is going to take so long to implement here? Also, when are they introducing it in other markets?
