In need of gearhead help

Changed the starter in a 95 Chevy truck and when we put the battery cables on it tried to start. So went and got another starter and same thing happened.

Any ideas out there?

Bear in mind, I'm not a gearhead.

I only know that I had a problem at one time that I thought could be the alternator or the starter, but when I took it to the mechanic, it turned out to be the ignition.

Haven't had a chance to look at your wiring, but if you have it hooked up right, you may have a starter enable relay stuck open.

Also, check to make sure none of your wires have fused anywhere

Crap, a ignition switch is too much for me. I am not taking the steering wheel off. Any idea how you would test it?

It may not be in the column. More likely in the fuse box. Need to get the schematic for your model, and track down what's involved in your ignition sequence [ie, there are fuses that engage/disengage if you're in park/neutral, pressing the brake, and engaging the starter via the ignition].

pulling a steering wheel is easy. wheel pulling kits are cheap. id run back through and K.I.S.S.

Thanks for the tips. Going to check out fuses now.

If you need it, I have info on 1995 P/Us, give me the model and engine, and I can see what I can provide.

ie, 1500, S-10, 2500, etc., then 4.3 V-6, 5.0 V-8, etc.

EDIT: Here's a schematic if you have a 1500 with V-6

battery cable on the starter touching the "S" terminal. Move the cable and make sure the purple wire isn't touch the red battery cable.

2500 with the 350\5.7. Thanks for the help.

prolly got a wire in your bunch running to your starter grounding to something or to each other ...

TrebMaxx 06-20-2010 02:32 PM

Problem solved. It was a fuse. Thanks for all the help.
