I worked Christmas Eve at a restaurant back in college...we were the only restaurant that stayed open. We expected there to be no crowd. We got slammed. I made $450. Merry Christmas.

Those complaining about working should watch the Georgia food stamp video.

In this stage of the economy, we are sadly clinging to this excuse. I work a 40-hour a week job but end up working 70-80 on many weeks because there's too much work for too few employees. And yes, that is frustrating when executives are compensated the same (often more) in a down economy, yet the average worker is working more hours for the same pay.

So yes, we should be thankful for our jobs. But that doesn't mean we should be happy when these kinds of things are done, in my opinion, very insensitively.

I really lucked out...I moved home and applied for a temporary job and the guy that interviewed me told me I was too qualified and told me about an opening they had and I ended up stumbling into the best (and easiest) job I've ever had.

For that, I'll work every damn holiday they throw at me.

I'm a salary employee now, at work, playing poker and posting on a Chiefs board...and this is somehow perfectly acceptable. I love America!

They hurt themselves overall...

I remember back in the 80's I worked for this trucking company and for thanksgiving or christmas (cant remember which) we always got this canned ham that probably cost 5 bucks or so in bulk like they bought them, well they decided one year instead of getting that canned ham for us to give us this big nasty memo posted on the employees wall that said haw bad we done this year, need to do better, blah blah blah...

Every driver figureed out a way to get atleast what that ham costed, some people slid rubber off the tires, some took and extra half hour at lunch etc. Drivers would walk by you and ask.. Did you get your ham today? and everybody would say yes.:thumb:

Bullshit. That's exactly how corporate America wants you to feel, but the second you do they'll walk the **** all over you.

When the economy is the way it is, Corps have the advantage, when the economy is strong, the worker has the advantage...

I go to work, mind my business and I go home... Don't have to deal with the public, Don't really have to answer to anyone unless I fail to get the loads from point a to point b in a timely manner or wreck. I assume others don't have it like this but this is how it is for me.

Clay -

Tonight, I'll be putting on my red shirt and going to work at Target after I eat Thanksgiving dinner. But when I sit down at the table, I'll be thinking about everything I'm thankful for -- including you.

When I started my petition asking Target to open later for Black Friday shopping, I never imagined it would be this successful. Nearly 370,000 people (including you!) signed in support, and my campaign inspired 157 other petitions by workers at retail stores around the country. I even flew to Target's headquarters in Minneapolis to deliver the signatures! I am truly in awe of the effect just one petition had for so many people like myself, who want to keep Thanksgiving dedicated to family.

Target may not have decided to open later on Thanksgiving, but you and I were definitely heard by retailers everywhere opening early for Black Friday shopping. My story was featured in the media 1,628 times, including interviews with the Washington Post, TIME, USA Today, and many, many more. (And in case you missed it from the previous email, you can see my interview on the Today Show here!)

When I first found out I would be forced to work on Thanksgiving, I felt angry and frustrated. Now, even though I have to go into work, I feel empowered, because all of you are standing with me. I know Target and other retailers got the message loud and clear that Americans care about Thanksgiving and family more than their bottom line.

Thank you so much for supporting me through this fight -- and have a Happy Thanksgiving.

It's not a fail. Target will sell a few more products today (many at a loss), but it's not worth the reputational hit they will take. Yet another example of idiotic opportunism trumping common sense.

If you don't want to work Thanksgiving work on finding a job that allows you to be off.

Where is the outrage over the Golden Coral Restaurant employees or the Bob Evans restaurant employees? Or the Holiday Inn employees?

Target and WalMart aren't the only service industries or retail stores working and others have been doing it forever.

Also and if it is such an outrage then nobody should show up to shop, but that wont happen so............

Lprechaun 11-22-2012 11:22 AM

Havent read through the whole thread but no I dont feel they deserve any less hours than they signed up for. EVERYONE knows retail stores hire seasonal workers for the crazy hours and massive amounts of product moving out of their stores. If you dont like the job you have good luck finding another one.
