Ad Blockers

Ok I have a small project I just finished up for a client and wanted to test it here.

First a poll to see who has an adblocker installed and second a test to see if you can see the text at the top of the page asking you to Whitelist ChiefsPlanet so I have money to buy drinks pay for the server. :D

So, what say you?

ClevelandBronco 09-09-2014 09:50 PM

AdBlock on Chrome on a Mac. I can see it.

EDIT: I can no longer see it. I killed AdBlock on this domain.

Bugeater 09-09-2014 09:51 PM

Yes, and it's kind of annoying.

lcarus 09-09-2014 09:51 PM

Just saw it and disabled it for this site. **** it's the least I can do. It's also the most I can do. I'm a broke mf'er

Sweet. That's the info I need! If you Whitelist ChiefsPlanet can you still see it? (shameless attempt to get you to whitelist us)

Bugeater 09-09-2014 09:52 PM

Don't people have to actually click the ads for you to get money?

lewdog 09-09-2014 09:52 PM

Adblocker on and now I can see that ****ing annoying text telling me my ad blocker is on which is kind of the opposite effect I want ad blocker having to block ads.

No, but clicking certainly helps a ton but some ads are based on views (even though I hide them at the bottom so no on really has to see them)

I whitelisted CP and it disappeared on refresh.

I noticed it right before this thread popped up and I was asking myself how long it had been there before I noticed it.

I have received an alluring offer to play Pokémon.

So the ad people know the specific number of users with adblock enabled and give you less money according to that?

No, when an ad is blocked it isn't even registered by the ad network, same as if the page never loaded.

BTW it should be off for you now, I hope.

Cool. Thanks man, I appreciate the feedback.

Not sure if I'll keep the message up there or not... but I would like to see how many people use adblock just for my own edification. One of those things I almost never think about.

Yeah, I just threw it up there to test. If I put a real message up there it will be far more obnoxious and possibly link to instructions on how to whitelist the site.

I believe I am a supporter (although it's been a while). I did see it until I turned off adblock on CP.

AustinChief 09-09-2014 10:06 PM

OK, total POLL fail on my part. If you don't see AND you use an ad blocker can you let me know. I should have made that two separate options.

Hell, I'll edit it now.

It may have been because I hadn't fixed that yet. I initially typed the wrong usergroup number into the if statement for it. Cuz I'm an idiot.

Goddammit, now there's a guy in a bathtub. I'm not sure I'm comfortable with a site that's supported by above-the-waist male nudity.

AustinChief 09-09-2014 10:21 PM

First off, I want to thank everyone for the feedback.

Second, what do you guys think? Should I leave it up there or possibly spruce it up and add a link to how to whitelist the site?

My thinking is... ads are what pay for the server costs and upgrades (if VB ever gets a decent version of VB5 finished) so it's important that they show.

Opinions?

Bowser 09-09-2014 10:22 PM

I see the ads under the header whenever I'm on the site but not logged on. Whenever I log on, they disappear.

kysirsoze 09-09-2014 10:23 PM

I like the link to how to white list. I didn't think about the ads thing till that text came up. I'd gladly deal with ads if it supported the site. I figure most people on here would feel the same, even if they don't have the technical savvy to figure out how to fix it.

BucEyedPea 09-09-2014 10:24 PM

I like seeing the ads. They're great for multitasking where I can shop and goof off at the same time. Saves time.

I think you should leave it up there for everyone, even supporters. It's not like the ads here are intrusive, you don't even see them unless you scroll way down the page.

Yep I added those sneaky ads a while back. I figured people who aren't logged in can't bitch.. and if they log in to bitch the ad goes away! Win-win!

That would be nice. AdBlock has been such a constant in my online life for like 10 years that I don't even know what the Internet is supposed to look like with ads. But I'd whitelist sites like this if it meant helping the ship stay afloat.

Discuss Thrower 09-09-2014 10:45 PM

Got an adblocker solely because of CP putting a stupid embedded flash ad every time I clicked on a new thread page.

Kaepernick 09-09-2014 10:47 PM

I see nothing. Because Apple.

So I didn't vote in your poll. I doubt Apple is affected the way PC is.

I actually tested on Apple and Windows. It should work regardless since it is just javascript.

Do you see the ads at the bottom of the page? If not you should see the tiny text message directly below the CP logo.

Anytime something like that happens, let me know. Our ads should NEVER have anything obtrusive. Just crap at the bottom of the page. I can manually block any ad network that pulls that shit.

Is there such a thing as TOO much?

AustinChief 09-09-2014 11:10 PM

I have added instructions for ADP (the most popular one) I think that should be enough for now...

http://www.chiefsplanet.com/adblock.html

AustinChief 09-09-2014 11:14 PM

It'll be interesting to look at the stats tomorrow. I had no idea so many people were using adblockers. I was guessing it was around 10% but apparently from what I just read (and looking at my poll, HEY I'm allowed to look at my own poll!) it is closer to 40% these days.

I would rather keep using AdBlockers here. What would be an appropriate donation to compensate?

tman 09-10-2014 08:59 AM

Is anyone seeing the malware ad redirect "xxx://popnexsus.com/?t=1707&sub=h728&tag=null" that showed up after last weeks slow down of CP?

I'm curious about this as well. I don't post often, but I lurk the shit out of this board. I'm willing to pay my share.

Iconic 09-10-2014 10:28 AM

IMO I don't mind them. Adds are at the absolute bottom and really aren't that irritating... Until you made this thread I don't even think I would have noticed the adds in the first place.

When you put them on the top it sucked balls tho.

Mr. Laz 09-10-2014 10:54 AM

I have one installed but i currently have it disabled.

Frosty 09-10-2014 11:26 AM

I whitelisted CP (I use Firefox with ADP) and thought "where are these ads that they were talking about".

Wow, they are really done there on the page. I don't see them at all unless I scroll down past where i normally read. Nice.

JakeLV 09-10-2014 12:02 PM

Nope, no ad blocker, Safari on a Mac.

lewdog 09-10-2014 03:15 PM

Just whitelisted and the ads are way down at the bottom. I'd never see them. I guess I'm ok with this.

jd1020 09-10-2014 03:21 PM

I disabled it simply because it got annoying after about the 5th time of clicking on a different topic because that text would load and bump it down the screen.

Hell if I know! :D

Anyone who donates more than a couple bucks(the minimum to cover paypal overhead) gets put in the supporters group. There is a "subscription" area in the user control panel and there is the green donate link above. The donate link doesn't automatically put you in the usergroup so if anyone uses that and I forget to move them over, just bug me and I can fix it.

Perfect, so far it appears to work perfectly except for a few "no script" type of blockers which are pretty rare anyway.

digger 09-10-2014 05:50 PM

Disable on ChiefsPlanet.com. Let the money roll in. ;)

Miles 09-10-2014 11:18 PM

Use Adblock Plus with Firefox and just disabled for this site. Now get the very unobtrusive ads but the subtle "hey asshole" message at the top remains.

Same here. Also using ABE since ABP sold out and started whitelisting "acceptable" ads.

Weird. All the script does is measure to make sure the ad divs have length and height values and not hidden. So basically, if you see the ads there is no way you should see the message.

Let me know if the message is still showing up and I'll test it with Firefox as well.
