Mock (2/28/13)

Well the good news is, we can get rid of one of the major assumptions of the offseason. We know who the QB is.

Assumptions for this mock:

1. The Chiefs resign Bowe, and let Dorsey and Albert walk.

4. Quinn and Hillis are out. Cassel is cut. Tyson Jackson stays on board, at reduced salary.

5. The Chiefs land DE Cullen Jenkins.

6. They get two compensatory picks, an extra third (Carr) and a 6th (Richardson).

On with what can charitably be considered a show.

1. OT Luke Joeckel, Texas A&M

Hey, somebody's got to protect Alex Smith!

3. QB Ryan Nassib, Syracuse

I really like Nassib as a second-day pick, particularly starting in the third round. I didn't think he was right for the Chiefs because the Chiefs really needed a 1st overall type QB. Now that Geno's out of the question, Alex Smith gives us a pretty good blueprint for what Reid likes in a QB. Accuracy, game management in the short- to intermediate-game, and high intangibles. Nassib has them all in spades.

3. CB Darius Slay, Mississippi State

This guy really stood out at the Combine. Most years I'd say he's a 2nd round pick, but the CB depth is so outstanding he could fall to the third.

4. TE Gavin Escobar, San Diego State

Escobar didn't have a particularly good Combine (4.8 40) but he's got really good hands and ran some good routes at SDSU. He's had two years of solid production and I think he has potential to push Moeaki here in a year.

5. DE William Gholston, Michigan State

A man can dream, at least. Gholston's on field production was much worse than his Combine workouts, which were superb. If teams refuse to fall for it, we could steal him in the 5th and see if we could develop him into the skyrocketing freight train he looked like he could have been.

6. WR Conner Vernon, Duke

Another pie-in-the-sky pick, because Vernon's likely going much earlier. But right now he remains undervalued almost everywhere Big Boards are posted online (probably has to do something with the fact he was clocked pretty slow at the Combine). But Vernon is a smart route runner with great hands. Really undervalued right now. I love him as a late-rounder.

6. ILB Bruce Taylor, Virginia Tech

Bruce Taylor ran slower than spit at the Combine, and I'm willing to bet he drops like a rock. He hits like one too, however, and would probably start immediately next to DJ as a thumper. Another late round pick I love.

7. FS Vaughn Telemaque, Miami

A really solid prospect out of Miami who didn't get much attention because of Ray Ray Armstrong. I think Telemaque is the superior prospect with outstanding size.

The Franchise 02-28-2013 11:36 AM

1. Luke Joeckel isn't the top rated LT.
2. Nassib will be gone before the 3rd round.

I like the CB and I really like the Duke WR.

Vernon's really easy to like. His work at the Combine popped.

His speed, of course, is a concern. But I'll drop a flyer on him in the late rounds.

**** me, that draft looks like shit.

But then I try to put my own together and realize that it's really hard to do when you're not taking a QB at first overall and you don't have a 2nd rounder in a really deep draft.

So yeah, all these drafts are going to look like shit now, just like the 2009 one did.

My only hope is that when they don't take Geno, they at least take Floyd. It's the only pick that may actually make a difference. Getting our own Justin Smith in here could really help ease the sting of losing Geno (and Manuel, since we also...ugh, I can't even say it.)
